people's taste in music tend to affect how much i respect their opinion on other things, no matter how hard i try to suppress those thoughts.

What kind of music do judge people hard for?

eta: that was mostly in jest. i do have a knee-jerk mental reaction against bands that i find terrible. sometimes it's because of the quality of the band's music, sometimes it's because of the band members themselves, and sometimes it's because of the fanbase (though that one is rarer).

That's really interesting. Are there particular genres or bands that will instantly make you judge someone either for better or worse?

genres, no, not really. except maybe rap metal and other metal-esque abominations.
bands, yeah.

Also, I suppose you can stop taking me seriously, because I might just be the most unmusical person in the world and my tastes are incredibly bizarre.

What do you mean when you say your tastes are bizarre? Do you have any examples? I only ask because I discovered a lot of cool music through some other people with bizarre tastes.

I guess by "bizarre" I mostly mean "eclectic". Though there's a bit of yer olde wtfe at work, too. Thus, though I like listening to some of the classics (Bach, Beethoven and, weirdly enough, Mahler), I find great enjoyment in obscene European trash rock (e.g. Leningrad or Sektor Gaza); in goofy rock from the nineties (e.g. some cheesy Estonians such as Kuldne Trio); and in lots of obscure songs created in single-party states (including, but not limited to, the USSR and the Third Reich).

To top it all, I once spent a month listening to nothing but Tetris theme remixes.

i don't really judge people who have bizarre taste because i find it quite interesting, and also because my own tastes are very eclectic.
i tend to have a knee-jerk reaction against people who like bands that i find terrible. overrated and generic bands irritate me more than obscure and diverse bands.

I see. And tbh I think I can sort of get behind that, hypocritical as it might be. Eclectic tastes of any kind are A-okay, but liking things I dislike is a major hindrance to a possible friendship.

eta: sorry if I sounded harsh, by the way - it doesn't reflect my feelings, I'm simply a tad sleep-deprived.

Hmmmm.

I don't agree when it comes to people liking or disliking different musical acts, or whatever, but I can kind of see where you're coming from when you start talking about broader genres and judgments of music. I have to admit that I do judge people a little bit who do the "any genre except country and rap" thing when they've only heard a couple songs on the radio, for instance, and things like that.

the "any genre except rap and country" thing is the epitome of ignorance. it's like saying you don't like sci-fi because you hate stephen king.

to be fair there is a reason a lot of people say that. they have very specific sounds that can be annoying to people. And I like at least a few things from every genre, but country and rap are the two hardest for me to find things I like with a higher proportion of things that grate on me. (especially country.)

That's fair. I don't think everyone should be required to like those genres or anything. I think there are a lot of people who say things like that in a really kneejerk, dismissive way though, which is more what I dislike.

I don't think that's as unreasonable as it seems at first glance. I personally have my doubts about the morals of people who listen to a lot of really violent or offensively sexual music, and I don't think that's unusual. Liking things in media correlates with how you view other real world situations.

This secret makes me want to tell you allllll my respect-destroying favorites :D
