Two years ago, I let down my guard/false bravado and showed my true timidity to my two dearest IRL friends. They friends-dumped me immediately.

I'm still not over how my true self drove them away. :( I thought friends were supposed to know your faults and like you anyway.

I admitted my fears, rather than pretending they didn't exist and keeping quiet. I'd express my worry about something they'd think trivial, like transportation home if it was way late; or I'd explain I didn't want to change bowling shoes because the guy behind the counter made me nervous; or I'd keep my bowl of chili even though it wasn't very good rather than send it back and offend the cook. Other little things like that. I guess over the weeks as I relaxed and let more insecurities show, it added up to me not being much fun.

In the end, they found a new friend, someone more like them: fearless and carefree.

In all honesty, if you had the ability to power through those situations before, I'm puzzled as to why you stopped. If you're able to put on "false bravado", as you put it, I'd say by definition you're *not* timid. You may feel scared, but timidity is in your actions, not your feelings.

ETA: I don't mean you shouldn't have shared with them or talked with them! I'm not saying you did anything wrong, I was just puzzled as to why you just started acting different, I guess I got the impression that you did that instead of talking to them?

I'm not trying to say you were in the wrong. I really don't know. I'm just saying...well...that I don't know, I guess.
