I hate...

Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Not as a person. I don't know anything about him as a person. But I hate his books. They sound like things I'd like, but they're so boring and creepy.

What do you find creepy about them? Also, do you read a translation? Usually the original language of a book is the best version.

Of course, everyone has their likes and dislikes, I'm just curious!

It's a translation. It's boring, I can't keep the characters straight, and it's full of awkward sex scenes.

Sounds like Love In The Time Of Cholera to me. Have you tried 100 Years Of Solitude? I liked that a lot better.

The one I'm reading right now is for an assignment, so I don't really have an option but yes, I own 100 Years of Solitude, tried to get into it a few years ago because I love the Tangled Family Tree trope. I just can't. It's his writing style, I guess. It's beautiful? Like, I can tell that it's "good writing", I just don't find it engaging. Sorry.

I'm too surrounded by Garcia Marquez stans to admit it unanon, but I agree. :\

Hahahah I feel sort of the same but everyone I know who's read him, loves his stuff! Although, I'll admit I like his short stories. Something about his novels just doesn't do it for me, but the short story collections are good. I dunno why - maybe his style just works better for me in small doses than stretched out over hundreds of pages.

Haven't read Marquez, but I fucking hate Paulo Cuelho.

His books are stocked in the "Classics" section at my local store. I tried reading "The Alchemist" and it was just shitty pseudo-spiritual garbage. If you just BELIEVE hard enough the universe will come to your aid! (Literally says something like this at some point.) Yeah, gee, I guess all those poor people just need to believe harder!

Like it tries to be all deep and spiritual and it's really just shallow and poorly written. It's everything about New Age spirituality that I loathe with a passion - all shallow "woo magick" flashiness, zero substance, and a deeply selfish, rotten core, wrapped in love and light. Ugh ugh ugh.

I see why it was popular in the 80s and 90s, I bet all those baby boomers just lapped it up.

Agreed. The only book I like of Coelho is "The demon and Miss Prim", but otherwise, no just no.

I finally read it last year and I felt like I would have found it really profound when I was like...14. Too late, missed the bus.

Way to diss the dead anon.

I don't see any mention of a dead anon?
