Otome Games

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
I looked them up and found out they're mostly reading, but can't really find too much else about them. I've seen a few secrets here about them and I'm concidering buying the new Hakuoki: Stories of the Shinsengumi game for PS3 that just came out, so I thought I'd ask about them here.

What's it like to actually play them? Is it really all reading like I read in one review or do you get to do some active things? How immerse are they and how much replay value to they have? Anything at all about them I'd love to hear if anyone familiar with the games has more to say about them.

It depends on the game. Most are all reading with some interactive decision-making tossed in (choosing different options can change the outcome of the story and who you end up with), some are all reading with no interaction whatsoever (these would only have one ending and the least replayability), some have complex stat systems and/or minigames. I think Hakuoki falls into the all-reading-with-some-interactive-choices category but I'm haven't actually played that one so I'm not sure.

I think the best way to know what it's like is to try playing one yourself. There are a bunch of quality (and often free) English-language otome games made by fans of the genre that you could download and try out. I recommend the following:

RE: Alistair++

Otome game with stats-building and interactive choices.

Royal Trap
http://www.hanakogames.com/royaltrap.shtml
Mostly reading with some interactive choices. It's a commercial game, but the demo's free.

Juniper's Knot

All reading, no interaction.

And if you can't download games for whatever reason, you can always try looking up walkthrough videos on Youtube.
