The Worst 'Expanded Universe'-related material for your fandom

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2014-05-18 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by this thread from the Star Wars secret the other day, I'm curious to know what y'all consider to be the worst (if not the absolute worst) spin-off/expanded universe material for your fandom. Includes video games, movies, comics, books, et al.

I'm just gonna go right out and say for the 'Mass Effect' series? 'Mass Effect: Deception'. Aside from some really bad lore-related errors, there were plenty of extremely offensive bits (a character with autism is pretty much "cured" of it, a firmly-established-as-gay male character suddenly is interested in the very much female asari), Kai Leng peeing in vases and stealing Anderson's cereal, characters getting killed by sharpened toothbrushes... it was all around bad. The BioWare forums even made a massive Google Document that had every single error documented. That's how reviled it was.

What say you?

Bwahahaha!

Man, if the BioWare forums were only good for one thing, it was the images and memes they spawned from 'Deception'. A shame such a really awful book was about the only thing that could unite the Mass Effect portion of those forums for a fleeting period of time, too.

The Final Fantasy 7 expanded universe. No question. Let me count the fucking ways:

1. Trying very hard to replicate the ground-breaking success of the original game without truly understanding what made it great. Instead they just lift the superficial 'cool' parts and plaster them everywhere, ignorant of the fact that it was HOW those cool parts were used that made the game awesome. Sephiroth and his final boss music is a prime example.

2. Took itself waaaaaay too seriously. FF7 was a game where you crossdressed to get inside the bedchamber of a sleazy pimp. It had moments of slapstick, naughtiness, humour and genuine good cheer. The expasion is just 99% GRITTINESS RAWR.

3. Over-complication. Complicated backstories, complicated plots, complicated outfits, complicated EVERYTHING. SE stupidly assumes that adding MORE 'cool' stuff will make it more cool, when it actuality it just makes everything more stupid.

4. Undoing the character developments of the first game. Cloud became a more rounded and happy person, Vincent made peace with his past, Barret started to create real productive change, etc. They reset that for petty angst.

5. Speaking of, ignoring all the non-pretty characters like Barret and Red XIII and making people like Cid prettier. Oh, and bringing back dead bishies because you can never have too many bishies. Fuck. Off.

6. Adding more and more empty and unremarkable characters that are not remotely memorable. I still remember Scarlett, Palmer, Don Corneo, Aerith's mother, and countless other characters. The expansion adds so many useless characters with stupid outfits who don't even remotely impact the narrative.

7. MOTHER. FUCKING. GENESIS. Who is based off a Japanese pop singer. Fuck. Off.

PREACH!

You summed up exactly why I really dislike the Compilation of FF7.

ESPECIALLY STUPID GENESIS. UGH. The way his character was implemented felt like something Marvel or DC would asspull. And that's not a compliment.

I liked FF Advent Children.

Kai Leng peeing in vases and stealing Anderson's cereal

I keep cracking up at those mental images now. I'd heard about how bad 'ME: Deception' was, but somehow I'd missed this part.

the lost video game. the mythology is nice, but gameplay wise it's just terrible.

any movie/OVA for any anime/manga series EVER.

particularly anything shounen but I'll side-eye any OVA on principle. at best, they reach "meh," but at worst holy god kill it with fire.

anyone is free to prove me wrong by citing a movie that added to or improved the original series. chances are that by being a shounen fan I might have missed some glorious shining gem in a different genre.

The Tsubasa Chronicle OVAs vastly improve on the series (though it helps that the anime series was pretty terrible). The OVAs actually adapts the material pretty faithfully and it makes a world of difference.

+1

I couldn't get past 10 episodes of the series, but the OVA was great. If only they'd let that studio adapt the series...

I'll chime in with the Fushigi Yugi OAV (it's shoujo). The original manga run was 18 volumes and IIRC, only the first 13 were used for the anime adaptation. They released the OAVs based on the last volumes of the manga and I think some of the episodes were based on the novels published.

So mostly the OAVS took a fairly faithful adaptation from manga to anime and just expanded on what was missing in the TV series run.

Are you counting Eikoden in that? Because that was terrible.

No, not Eikoden. That's because Eikoden was based on the novels published after FY finished.

All canonical expanded universes are pure evil.

Kai Leng peeing in vases and stealing Anderson's cereal

I've already firmly decided to never read that book (largely from what I'd heard about how badly they butcher quarian lore in it, which I know would make me unreasonably angry) but that is hilarious. I'd heard of the cereal-stealing, but not the peeing. Omg.

Also: characters getting killed by sharpened toothbrushes ...I'm guessing Traynor was having a very bad day?

New Jedi Order. Just New Jedi Order. The start of the era where the EU had to be dark and grim because supposedly that was the only thing people read. Even though that isn't what Star Wars was and nothing about these books felt like Star Wars. Even though there was character assassination left and right. And the awesome female characters we had became all about their relationships and no longer the focus. Mara's story was her illness and wanting a child. Jaina got some story, but a lot of it was about romance and Jacen became more important than her. Leia took a backseet to Han.

eeuuugghhh it's like they took the worst aspects of 90s comics

let's have it be UBER DARK AND GRIM AND GRITTY because that's so MATURE AND ADULT. and that's why people watch star wars, amirite?

oooh and let's just shit all over our perfectly good female characters, because who cares about them anyway!

ugh ugh ugh that is not star wars

Agreed. Say what you will about things like The Crystal Star, but at least they were still Star Wars. NJO was not.
