(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)The other thing (maybe similar) is that a romantic storyline is like other kinds of storylines -- it's part of a character development arc. If early on you think X/Y is happening and that makes you more interested in the canon, and then X/Y peters out into nothing or X/Z happens instead, it gives me this feeling of unresolvedness or a missed opportunity for a strong finish to that character arc.
I agree with others that part of it is the ability to get more moments for the pairing in canon, as well as the whole "validation that I'm right" thing (but more in a "So I'm not crazy for thinking there was something going on between those two! Yes!" kind of way). You have a point, though, that when the fandom as a whole is cool with disregarding canon and ships the non-canon pairing, then your OTP being canon won't magically make you happy. Juggernaut pairing vs. unpopular pairing issues, heh.
