I don't always want my ships to be canon but I mean...I would think it would be pretty self-explanatory that if you think A and B would be happier together, that that's where you'd want the story to go. And let's not forget that canon pairings tend to follow really predictable patterns (more so in some mediums than others maybe) and wanting a different relationship to be explored romantically can be a desire to see more unconventional dynamics explored and represented. I'd say the ideal is that the relationship is explored enough that I have something to work with but not necessarily having a chance of being endgame.
