On the one hand, I kinda get why people like having canon OTPs. I had one once, it was nice, until one half got killed off.

On the other hand I have shipped non-canon a lot (mostly because I ship moctly slash) and I feel there's a measure of freedom in interpretation in non-canon that canon ships don't have. Canon ships, writers feel beholden to still to the major canon beats of the relationship, non-canon, they make up their own beats.

I have also grown to believe that more often than not, canon will end up ruining it anyway, so I'd rather have fanfics for my OTPs where they aren't beholden to stick to some public media standard, or feel like they should stick to annoying stereotypes and relationship dynamics.

But if you like shipping canon, I won't stop you! I will however think you're an idiot if you start saying I'm a fool for shipping non-canon. I ain't in teh ship wars.

I do agree with Mimi Sardinia mostly. For me there is only one thing that I really care about, canon or no canon: that the romance grows in the story, that I can see/feel the energy between the characters. There are canon pairings like Ron/Hermione where this is simply not the case, and where I tend to disbelieve the canon pairing.

If I read a story, and I can see the or could see the attraction of two characters I care little about the pairing being canon or not. I like non-canon pairings as much as canon pairings, depending on how well they are written.

Sometimes I find a canon pairing bland or unrealistic, where my mind starts wondering about different options. Aragorn and Arwen are such a case- I know that Tolkien wrote their story in the style of medieval courtly romance, which limits their story a lot. But on a more practical note, I have my doubts about a King returning to rule a foreign country, who wants to bring a foreign Queen with him. That's not a smart move on the political board. So my story-brain keeps questioning that pairing, and a good story with a different pairing would appeal to me most likely.

I do not quite get why people hang themselves up whether or not the pairing is canon. I'd more ask - is the story good and is the author good?

"until one half got killed off."

This is why you don't ship gay couples on soap operas.

Or in Torchwood it seems.
