Monkeys, especially chimpanzees and gorillas, scare me. I don't find them cute at all. I would never want to encounter one in real life.

They stink too.

those aren't monkeys

it's understandable why you'd be scared of them, though. I think chimps and gorillas are really cool, but I would never approach a wild one without an expert. They can be pretty dangerous.

Oops, sorry, I always forget about those kinds of things. I probably mean that apes scare me. (and monkeys too tbh)

Monkeys are little assholes. When I was a kid and was walking through the zoo in Singapore, they stole my lunch.

I agree; I think they're really cool; WOULD NOT attempt to hang out with them, and people who try to make pets of chimpanzees for example make me feel a heady blend of anger and despair.

That makes me angry because chimps are NOT pets. They're apes. It's one thing to raise some in captivity but don't treat them like pets. They belong with professionals or (better) in the wild, not in someone's home where they'll probably be bored, neglected, frustrated, and potentially dangerous without anyone professional there to notice/control them.

I think the great apes should have a limited set of rights and generally left alone except by people who know how to live with them. The same is true of whales and dolphins.

honestly, I agree.

My sister is TERRIFIED of all types of apes/monkies.

They're also very aggressive and would probably do some pretty heavy damage to a person if they snap. Just look at how many attacks there have been in the news. I'd rather be in a room with ten skunks or a lion than an aggressive chimpanzee.

They are very scary in real life. I've been chased by wild monkeys, and it is nowhere near as fun as it sounds.

I'm not scared of them, but they're Uncanny Valley territory for me.

Chimps are known to eat humans in Africa. I'm not even joking, they steal babies and eat them. One poor girl had her arm/fingers eaten off but was saved. :(

This. Seeing them walking almost upright is terrifying to me.

Any primate bigger than about 2 feet high scares me. Chimps the most those - those fuckers are vicious and could rip your arms, legs and head off without a second thought if they wanted. I swear I read an article about there being a sociopath chimp found too...

tl;dr: Chimps are basically humans, but stronger, with no laws and no way to communicate effectively between us except force. Of course we should be scared of them :(

They also eat monkies/humans if they feel like it. Fucking terrifying.

I still count chimps as animals, because no matter how smart, they are still controlled by their instincts.

I have a strong belief the real demarcation line between "animal" and "human" is all about instinct.

I'm cool with gorillas, though I wouldn't want to encounter one. I hate chimps, though. I used to be okay with orang-utans, but after reading a report on some of the creepy things they've done in captivity...I am not okay with them any more.

I agree. I respect them as animals, and think they can do cute things. But aesthetically, I don't like how they look, and as such I have zero interest in them.

They're just as aggressive as us, they don't have laws keeping them in check, and they're stronger than us. You're right to be scared of them.

Let me tell you the story of Taronga Zoo's King Kong.

My mother, when she was young, went to the zoo with her mother (probably with her brother and sister too), one time they visited Sydney. This was a time before the trend of actually bothering to give zoo animals landscaped enclosures or even just toys, so all King Kong - a big gorilla - had, was a loop of rope he could sit or swing on. He sat there, apparently bored, until he reached down, pooped in his hand, and flung it through the bars of his cage, at the humans.

Now my grandmother was smart enough to guess what he was up to and got out of the way, and pointed out to my mum that King Kong was totally laughing at all the squealing humans. Some time after that, before Mum's next visit, the zoo staff started at least letting King Kong have some toys.

Gorillas at least can pull some tricks if they put a mind to it. Also? I am glad zoos now give their animals enclosure with landscaping, toys, and give them activities so they aren't bored.

But I do personally agree that apes are not cute.
