it's understandable why you'd be scared of them, though. I think chimps and gorillas are really cool, but I would never approach a wild one without an expert. They can be pretty dangerous.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-20 12:33 am (UTC)(link)tl;dr: Chimps are basically humans, but stronger, with no laws and no way to communicate effectively between us except force. Of course we should be scared of them :(

I have a strong belief the real demarcation line between "animal" and "human" is all about instinct.

Re: Controversial opinions: Animal edition
My mother, when she was young, went to the zoo with her mother (probably with her brother and sister too), one time they visited Sydney. This was a time before the trend of actually bothering to give zoo animals landscaped enclosures or even just toys, so all King Kong - a big gorilla - had, was a loop of rope he could sit or swing on. He sat there, apparently bored, until he reached down, pooped in his hand, and flung it through the bars of his cage, at the humans.
Now my grandmother was smart enough to guess what he was up to and got out of the way, and pointed out to my mum that King Kong was totally laughing at all the squealing humans. Some time after that, before Mum's next visit, the zoo staff started at least letting King Kong have some toys.
Gorillas at least can pull some tricks if they put a mind to it. Also? I am glad zoos now give their animals enclosure with landscaping, toys, and give them activities so they aren't bored.
But I do personally agree that apes are not cute.
