Because a lot of the reasons behind them are bullshit. What's wrong with tank tops? Who cares if you can see my shoulders?

There's a difference between work dress code and school dress code. When I meet with clients, I dress nicely because I'm representing the company and want to appear professional because they pay me and I want to stay employed. When I was in school, I was representing myself - and the school, not by choice. See the difference?

The public schools are prepping kids for that though.

Kinda like everything else they do.

Except not. My schools sure never got me prepped for the real world.

I am so sick of that statement.

I agree with the tank top thing, that's ridiculous, and from what I've seen, it's always arbitrarily enforced along gender lines, but one of the signs I saw going around tumblr protesting a school uniform complained that the girls couldn't wear "see through tops".

Why. Why do you need to wear a see-through top in high school.

Let everyone wear tank tops, especially when it's warm!

But see-through tops? Seriously?

That post on tumblr is ridiculous and I hope the girl who made those signs gets told how inappropriate the accusations she's making with them are. Only someone who sexualizes teenage girls would think a teenage girl's outfit is too sexualized? The hell?

Mmm I think she had a couple good points, like about the tank tops, I mean, while individual tank tops can be inappropriate depending on the style, I don't think that tank tops in general are bad, either ban then for everyone, or don't ban them at all (but ban certain styles, like super large arm holes so the shirt is basically cut in half/excessive cleavage), but yeah. Why do you need to wear a see-through top or a midriff baring top to school?

So, yeah, I can see her argument when it comes to certain clothes- if seeing a teenage girl's shoulders is too sexy for you, and you're sexualizing that, that is a problem!

In my experience, when my high school went to a dress code that included a ban on see-through clothing, it was specifically stated that no part of your clothing could be sheer, regardless of where it was or what was under it. As in, if your shirt was completely acceptable in every other way but had sheer sleeves, or if you were wearing an acceptable top under a lacey shrug, it violated the dress code.

Yeah, I can see how that would be frustrating, and if the OP of that series of images ever stepped up and clarified that what you said is what they meant, I would be behind them 100% on that one, as that does seem a bit ridiculous.

I personally think that there should be a level of formality to clothing at institutes of learning.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that, but then again, if we go that route, what's wrong with wearing just underwear? Or nothing at all? I don't think it's bad. I'm all for public nudity, in fact.

But I also don't think dress etiquette is an outdated concept. I think standards should be equal and identical for men and women, granted. But I don't think asking students to be covered from shoulders to knees is inherently sexist (as long as the same is true for guys, too).

I pretty much agree with this comment (except the public nudity part, not a big fan of that).

It's only sexist if the people imposing it are all "oh, our poor innocent boys! However will they get by in school with those temptresses always distracting them?" or something of that degree, and I don't think it's necessary to separate the rules by gender like they do - I think it's totally legit just to say "look, you must wear sleeves, you must cover your entire torso, and you must wear a bottom garment that reaches [mid-thigh, or insert appropriate parameter here]. And no sagging, that shit's gross." and applying it to everyone.

Re: School Dress Codes

(Anonymous) 2014-05-20 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think wording is KEY. If a school says GIRLS must cover up because they shouldn't dress like sluts and they are distracting to boys? Hell yes, that is sexist. That deserves to be attacked. But if a school simply sets a standard of, say, all students must be covered from shoulders to knees, I don't think that's sexist at all.

I also would say it is sexist to allow girls to wear skirts but not guys (and in terms of school uniforms, to even have separate male/female outfits at all). I wouldn't put that in the rules. But "dress respectfully" means something, I think, and isn't a concept I'd eliminate.
