I love my dogs and my cats equally. I can't play favorites between them because they're all my favorites.

Akhal Teke horses are the shiniest breed, but that's all they've got going for them. Arabian horses are better in every way that matters.

Arabians - are they? I've always heard they're very temperamental.

Not so much in my experience. They're friendly, affectionate, eager-to-please, always begging for treats and love to show off and be fussed over, but they do have a tendency towards cowardice. My own Arabian, Sharif, has calmed down a lot since I first got him 16 years ago (he was 5 at the time), but when I was just starting on his training, he was a complete fucking wimp. Spooked at cats, goats, gates shadows, and, due to a previous owner's abuse, hated having his ears handled, which, among other things, made bridling a half-hour chore each ride. He has long since completely overcome that particular hurdle, I'm happy to say, but the spookiness has been a bit more of a challenge. Sharif even tried to bolt away from a teensy tiny baby bunny as recently as 2010, and only a few weeks ago he gave the side-eye/snort combo to the sudden appearance of his pasture-mate/life-partner, Butch, whom he has known for 11 years and with whom he has been exclusively sharing a pasture for about 2 years.

Tl;dr summary: Arabians are generally fairly spooky and high-strung, but they love people, they love attention and they love to show off. Also, a good 70% of the Arabians I've known (including Sharif) would happily load themselves into a horse thief's trailer if he offered them treats. Sharif's favorite is lemon-flavored Atomic Warheads.

Yeah, it's the high-strung nature that I've heard about.

Hahaha, I cannot imagine feeding a horse Atomic Warheads. How in the world did you figure out he liked them?

Basically, if it looks edible, Sharif will try to eat it. I happened to have a bag of Atomic Warheads with me at the barn one day, and he kept nosing at it, so I gave him one, expecting him to freak out. Instead, he savored it, and then wanted another. That's not even the weirdest thing he's tried to eat, either. Once at a show he took a bite of my Slim Jim when I wasn't looking. He spat it out, but he certainly gave it the ol' college try. He also likes to nibble on my cane and bracelets, and knows how to surreptitiously steal treats out of people's pockets. Other people at the barn have long since learned not to keep treats in their back pockets, because they won't even know they're missing until they reach for them and find only Sharif's nose as he looks for more. I tried to teach him to go for wallets instead, but I've had no luck so far.
