Re: Controversial opinions: Animal edition

Very late to the party, but since I just got an e-mail about this very subject:

I don't understand why slaughtering horses for meat is so terrible. If it's not stealing peoples pets, regulated, and done humanly what's the big deal? Why are so many people ok with raising cows, and a lot of other animals for slaughter? Or for people to be ok with hunting animals like deer, but raising horses for meat is some horrible abomination? I don't get it.

Because a lot of people see horses as pets and thus the thought of eating them is revolting. Thats basically the only objection I've seen to eating horse meat.

I don't agree with it tbh. Then again, I've never really cared for horses.

I'm American, so horse meat of course seemed weird. Then again, I'm vegetarian, but it seemed natural to me that "companion" animals aren't to be eaten. But then I lived in a country that DOES eat horse meat, and to be fair, I don't think it's really all that different from cattle. I will save my opposition to eating meat purely for environmental/animal welfare reasons - i.e. if the horse is treated humanely, I have no problem with horse meat.
