Hey, something I've actually read!

Spark culture definitely glorified obesity, but I don't think the author particularly glorified Spark culture. None of the cultures in that setting were portrayed all that positively.

Wait... is it Spark or Speck? I've never read the books but "Speck" means bacon and/or lard in German and that fit into the OPs complaint.

I actually remembered them as being called Dappled, but maybe that was what they were called by outsiders. I haven't read the series in forever.

I don't know about glorifying Speck culture overall, but the books absolutely glorified their attitude about obesity and eating, because the author constantly contrasts it with all the hate from non-Speck cultures.
