Hey, something I've actually read!

Spark culture definitely glorified obesity, but I don't think the author particularly glorified Spark culture. None of the cultures in that setting were portrayed all that positively.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-20 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait... is it Spark or Speck? I've never read the books but "Speck" means bacon and/or lard in German and that fit into the OPs complaint.

I actually remembered them as being called Dappled, but maybe that was what they were called by outsiders. I haven't read the series in forever.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-20 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know about glorifying Speck culture overall, but the books absolutely glorified their attitude about obesity and eating, because the author constantly contrasts it with all the hate from non-Speck cultures.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-20 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, "overcompensating for all the hate obese people get" sounds like exactly what I need in my life right now, so. . . thanks for the rec.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-20 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I see what you're getting at here, but I'm not sure this will be a huge help. I've read the series and like the OP, felt that Hobb was taking it a bit far. There's a big difference between fat positivity (or simply not hating on obese people!) and a book that portrays overeating as some sort of sexy sacred ritual. I exercise regularly. I eat healthy, though I could use more attention to portion control. I'm still overweight and diabetic (type 2), but working on it. I DO NOT WANT OR NEED TO BE TOLD THAT STUFFING MY FACE UNTIL I PHYSICALLY CANNOT MOVE IS SOME SORT OF UTOPIAN IDEAL.

That's not just an unhealthy message, but a condescending one as well.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-21 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
hm, well, that's not what I wanted :\ . . . but it sounds like it could be interesting anyway? It depends on how it's handled, I guess.

I never read those books, but I can sort of imagine.

I've been overweight most my life - and while I'm currently trying to lose weight, that's mostly for my health, not because I hate how I look.

I'm happy some people are advocating for pretty much "how I look is not your business".

But, on the other hand, even - or especially - as a fat person some things creep me out. The part of the FA movement that just rejects the notion of it having medical consequences, for example. Also he whole feeder/feedee thing. Uh.

I'm okay with dudes that are into larger girls and not creepy about it, but it sort of rubs me the wrong way too if you glorify something I've struggled with for a large part of my life.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-21 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much everything you just said. And I'm a guy.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-05-21 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Ignoring its effect on health is what I found annoying about one Tumblr post just today. (It was about overweight people doing yoga). I feel that it sends a wrong message because at some fat persentage killos just have to go, at least some of them. I wanted to say: "Wrong, lies!"

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-05-21 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you know, it does have effects. And, even if you can't say if it's the cause, it certainly doesn't help.

I have high blood pressure (which my mom also has, so not sure if genetic or weight - but I'm guessing probably both).

There's also the issue of me being born with hypermobility, and my joints have it hard staying together as it is. Excess weight doesn't quite help. I must be insanely lucky, because I know a girl my age who weighs way less, but has much more pain/complications and is on meds and wears finger braces. I have been having more trouble with my ankles and feet though, lately, which is the main reason I'm losing weight now.

As someone who is attracted to bigger people and likes a bit of feederism as a fantasy kink - I think the fat positivity movement and FA feeders/feedees should be kept very separate and be understood as different things.

Obviously there is overlap between the communities, but really, I don't think it's that hard to understand that one movement is about lessening discrimination against a group of people because of how they look, and the other is about sexualising that same group - you know, different end goals.

the problem with that is that every guy who is attracted to fat girls (and visa versa) is treated like they are a freak, like there is only one standard of beauty, and if you have a preference outside of that you are a creep.

What is speck culture? Wikipedia is just confusing me more.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-20 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a fictional people in the fantasy series pictured in the secret.

All I remember from the Soldier's Son trilogy is that Hobb's painful overdescription of eating, travelling, and scenery allowed me to skip scores of pages at a time and miss almost nothing.

Also that it had a tediously dull happily ever after ending.

Also that despite the focus on a culture other than Fantasy Medieval Europe, the natives were boring and stereotypical as hell.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-20 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I thought maybe Hobb kinda deserves a gold star for trying, but the series was a major dud.

this description legitimately makes me want to read this more, not less

I really ought to read Hobb, honestly, people have spoken really highly of her but I've just never been able to get into her stuff.

I loved the Assassin series (all six of the ones about Fitz and the Fool), was meh about the ships, and could barely finish the first book of this one. It felt like she was recycling all the mediocre parts of the Assassin books.

Oh lord the Liveship Traders series was shite. I barely made it halfway through the first book and kept wondering which trite, untalented romance author had murdered Robin Hobb and stolen her identity.

*is suddenly interested in reading these books*

(Anonymous) 2014-05-21 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
so? it isn't like our current culture doesn't glorify thinness.

fat people are encouraged to have disordered eating and indulge in disordered behaviours to not be fat. There are plenty of fantasy worlds that focus on how wonderful thinness is.

I don't understand why this is such a problem.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-21 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
Robin Hobb is a horrible bitch who's another one of those pro - writers who believe anybody that writes fanfic is a pedophile, so I wouldn't buy a damn thing from her.
