All I remember from the Soldier's Son trilogy is that Hobb's painful overdescription of eating, travelling, and scenery allowed me to skip scores of pages at a time and miss almost nothing.

Also that it had a tediously dull happily ever after ending.

Also that despite the focus on a culture other than Fantasy Medieval Europe, the natives were boring and stereotypical as hell.

Yeah. I thought maybe Hobb kinda deserves a gold star for trying, but the series was a major dud.

Having the series actually star one of the natives instead of Yet Another White Guy would have been a better effort, imo.

this description legitimately makes me want to read this more, not less

I really ought to read Hobb, honestly, people have spoken really highly of her but I've just never been able to get into her stuff.

She really hates fanfiction and thinks it's pathetic/fundamentally shitty and violates copyright and is an insult to original writers, jsyk.

eh

Not going to sweat someone opposed to fanfiction, I'm sure I've read and enjoyed stuff by much more awful people anyway

I don't think the Solder Son trilogy is her best work, to be honest. I enjoyed the Royal Assassin trilogy much more.

That's kind of what I hear.

But the Royal Assassin trilogy (or whatever it's called) honestly just sounds really bad. I know book by its cover etc but it just sounds goofy and bad.

the only series of hers I've gotten through is the liveship traders, and I loved it. It inspired me to try the other ones, but no luck...

idk, it's hard for me to judge it, but the Royal Assassin (and its continuation, the Fool trilogy) are the only books of hers that I truly liked. I couldn't get into any of the others at all.

I know. I avoided reading it for ages because it sounded like a horrible mess of old fantasy clichés. While I can't say it ended spectacularly, I will say it was a lot more enjoyable and complex than it sounded by the jacket blurb. That and the Tawny Man trilogy is her best work.
