Re: Days of Future Past (spoilers) - retry

So, I just went back to from seeing it.

Fr those of you who saw it, what did you think of it?

For me, things I loved:
- MacAvoy's performance all the way. I was impressed.
- Blink is like the coolest thing ever
- Bishop is pretty much exactly how I imagined him to be
- They managed to make the Sentinels actually scary and not big pink robots.
- Quicksilver's breakout scene, which I adored.

Things I wasn't to crazy about:

- Mystique. She's better, but she still feels like her personality is not quite "right".
- Bolivar Trask. Such a missed opportunity. Dinklage hardly got the chance to act.
- No Bishop being sent back. That would have been cool.
- The whole mutant extermination camp thing was a bit too glossed over for me, too clinical.

And also:

Did you watch until the end? Looks like they're doing Apocalypse next. That would be so cool.

So thoughts? Feelings?

Sweet. Any notable deaths? (Deaths that stick. I imagine everyone dies in the future, but presumably they get un done.)

Yes, lot of people die in the future but it gets reset: Storm, Blink, Warpath, Iceman, Sunspot - all die in the future.

However, while not on-screen. Angel, Azazel and Emma Frost are said to be dead in this timeline at a point in time pre-reset.

Ah. Well, while I love Emma in the comics, I think based on her terrible appearance in First Class, it's probably for the best that she's gone. What ever happened to the diamond girl in Wolverine that was vaguely Frost like? Why didn't they go that route with her? Bah.

I don't know weather I'll see this movie, I'll be honest. First class was the last time I felt I really enjoyed n X-men movie. Too much has been fucked up in Wolverine and X3. (Plus the "Bad Future" episodes of the 90's cartoon always really bummed me out.)

On the subject of X3, what do we know, if anything, about the bullshit depowering of Rogue? Did that stick?

I re-watched first class before seeing this - nd I must say, I think this is in some ways the better movie. First Class had great moments (like Magneto's past, or the whole training sequence) but I feel this one's more balanced and the acting also seemed up a notch for me.

Rogue was almost not in the movie except at the very end, and didn't use her powers, but there's no indication of being depowered. However, while I'm fuzzy on all the storylines over the years, I do believe Rogue was depowered in the comics several time, too.

When I started reading them she was a flyer and super-strong (having permanently taken Carol Danvers' powers). But even her "touch" powers were temporarily gone in the comics.

I am not surprised. I think the most shocking thing they could do would be to off Jackman. They don't know how to make an X movie without him.

To be fair, with the kind of stories they're doing (and marvel has always done) they could easily off him and bring him back in another timeline.

Xavier: dead, with Magneto picking up his mantle for AoA, y/n?

On a scale of 1-10, how hot was Erik?

Did Rogue actually show up? So tired of the she's there/no she's not/she's there that we got in the press.

- Xavier: not dead actually. So I'm guessing AoA will be more similar to the total retcon the did in the comics, too. This story stands on its' own.

- Erik was pretty hot. I'd say about 8,5 - rating slightly lower than the past film for me, because there thee was more Magneto mental anguish/angst/tears in First Classin this one and I'm sort of into that.

- Rogue: she's just in a scene at the very end. She might as well not be in it. It's basically a cameo.

Well, I think I'm actually glad they didn't kill him off, since they pretty much just un-killed him. I wonder if AoA is going to stick with the same cast? I assume so.

Are there any ridiculous Charles and Erik moments in this one?

I have no idea.

SPOILER for the lil bit after the movie.

We only see young Apocalypse in Egypt and the shadows of the horsemen - so that's all there's to go by.

Charles/Erik: I feel less so than in First Class.

That being said: they do have an interesting dynamic in the one, with both friend/enemy aspects being highlighted quite well.

They play chess together again.

And iirc they actually hold hands as when they're old and shit is hitting the fan.

I'm not an Erik/Xavier shipper though, so I might not be giving you the right highlights here!

Eh, I'm not a big shipper for them, either. I just thought that parts of the last movie were hella gay, and was interested in knowing if they'd quashed it or not. Thank you for being so patient with the questions.

Nah, not at all. I was excited about the movie and wanted to discuss it. I'm just sorry it led to so much pissed-offness before.

Re: Days of Future Past (spoilers) - retry

(Anonymous) 2014-05-21 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, on the one hand: Apocalypse and the horsemen, very cool! On the other hand, as a way old comics reader, I really liked the Angel/Archangel as Death, and yet I don't see that happening in the movies. And even if they did, I don't think it would translate well.

I kind of feel torn, when it's a storyline I really liked in the comics - I know it won't be the same in the movies (nor should it, necessarily - different medium and all), as the comics have long backstories that can add extra weight to a storyline.

Bah! I don't know what I want. I want to say "make my favorite stories into movies, but don't mess them up." And of course, every fan has their own favorites, so what are the odds everyone is going to be happy.

In any case, Apocalypse is cool enough that I already know I won't be able to resist checking out the movie. Sorry for the tl;dr - I'm working out my comics vs movies issues. ;)

I feel he same about Archangel - would really have loved him, but no - doesn't seem like that will b happening in this timeline.
