Huh. And here I thought that,if anything, it was supposed to be some dystopian futuristic setting - something a long, long time after some great big catastrophe. Like Adventure Time, just less colourful. Because of the old timey buildings meet anachronistic weird tech stuff and all.
But anyway, I still think it's a completely fictional, very loosely inspired by all kinds of things setting plus a dose of rule of cool thrown in.

This is exactly what I thought. I don't know if I just made this up and thought it was canon, but I thought the premise was that it's our world, eaten away by titans, set in the future when humans were backed away into one tiny civilization. I thought all resources were basically focused in on the only discovered way to fight titans (i.e. the jet packs and the canons and stuff), and over time, other things were lost.

So futuristic, dystopian hodge-podge of historical regression.

I don't even read/watch this series but this is what I've always assumed. Never once occurred to me that it would be in the past.
