The sword in the picture is long because it's designed to cut out a large portion of flesh of a Titan, not because it's copying any style of historical sword.
Again, I'm not saying that Attack on Titan is set in Europe the 1800s; I'd say it's clearly still a fantasy setting. But if you look at the clothes, government, and so forth of the show, it's just not all very "medieval".

I'm not arguing that - just pointing out that most people aren't really reacting strongly either way because it's a mess overall so there's no real point in worrying about when it's set anyways.
