I don't ever want to learn anything personal about the authors of the fic I read. I don't want to see your pic. I don't want to know anything.

Because I once learned that the author of a VERY hot fic was a virgin. Like, in her 20s, never been kissed, no immediate prospects. I couldn't handle my illusion being shattered like that.

When I found out the Monkees didn't sing their own songs for the most part, I was equally shattered...and I came DECADES after The Monkees, so it wasn't like it wasn't public knowledge by that time. I don't want to know too many personal details about things. I like being blissfully unaware about certain things.

Ummmm why does it bother you that a virgin wrote a hot fic? People can write about things they haven't experienced, and it actually probably proves that they're even more talented if they do it well.

Your illusions of what? jesus that sounds creepy.

Do you mean they didn't sing their own songs as in they didn't write them? If so that's not a big deal at all because tons of bands don't write the songs they sing. Or do you mean they didn't actually sing the songs that were released as theirs? If that's the case...whoa. That's crazy.

Well, the Monkees started out as a tv series about a fictional band, that then became a real band. So, they did and they didn't, I think the first album(s) were released and there was no credit given to the other musicians performing on it, trying to give the illusion that it was all the same band you saw on tv. Later on I think it was mostly themselves though.

Yeah, everyone knows virgins are innocent and pure as the driven snow and can't possibly have any idea what sex is like or how to write a good story. How terrible that your assumptions about somebody else's personal life were disproven.

Man, if I found out the author of a very hot fic was sexually inexperienced IRL, I would think, "Wow! What a talented and hardworking writer!" Then I would leave a comment congratulating the author on being talented and hardworking and thanking her for the fic, if I hadn't already.

Being able to write about things you haven't directly experienced is one of the skills involved in writing fiction. I'm not sure I understand the objection.

Not really sure what "illusion" was being shattered with your first point. I mean, I'm a 20-something never been kissed virgin and I still know how sex works. I know what I personally find hot or not. I have friends who talk about their sexual experiences. Inexperienced =/= oblivious. If someone is a good writer it doesn't matter.

So are you just as disappointed when you read a fic with bad/illogical/physically impossible sex in it, written by someone sexually experienced? Because that happens much more often.

I admit to having my mind completely blown when I discovered one of the hottest smut writers I've found is asexual. After getting over my brain's BSOD, I went, "Dang, that writer's talented", and I respect them even more now.

I wrote smut as a virgin.
A very sexually active friend of mine, who didn't know I was a virgin, used some of my fics when she was asked to write stories for a phone sex lines and ran out of ideas.
