Your sample size is too small for an accurate conclusion to be drawn.

But it's good that you're happy with your choices.

I know two Teen Wolf BNFs (I'm not in the fandom, but I know they get a huge ton of feedback), and... both are definitely the stereotype.

My one question is...was this "loser" happy? I think that's about the only question there is to ask. If she is, then stop comparing yourself to her and let other people be happy in any way they want to be.

Kind of OT but I hate how living with your parents is considered living "at home". Why can't people just say "living with your parents"? If you consider it your home, then it's just kind of redundant. If you want to be descriptive of the situation, it really isn't. I know it's stupid but it annoys me.

Wow, you're assuming a lot. You can't really know anything about her circumstances over the internet. For one thing, the economy really sucks and jobs can be hard to find. I was a victim of downsizing a couple years ago and haven't been able to find another job. I'm not even talking about just in the field my degree is in. The couple call backs I got didn't pan out and even retail isn't calling me back. I had to move in with friends after my unemployment ran out and I couldn't pay my bills. Only reason I didn't move back in with my parents is because they're not living.

I was suicidal there for awhile and this person could be using TV and the internet as a coping mechanism, just like I do.

Judge all you want but just because someone you once admired isn't living some fabulous life doesn't mean 1)they're a stereotypical, unmotivated slob or 2)that you'll turn out to be in the same boat.

If you enjoyed her fic and she's not a shitty person, what her real-life circumstances are don't affect you at all and it's weird you assume anything from it. To each their own, though.

Ya know, I'm a fat, mostly unemployed loser in my 30's (who sort of lives with my parents, in the same building anyway)...and except for the unemployed part, which I'm working on, I'm mostly okay with that.

I have a great social life (that has nothing to do with fandom), a drama-free relationship, do a lot of volunteer work that is satisfying, and learned to travel on a budget and it's more fun than I ever imagined.

I have discovered that maybe I want to do other things in my life than I thought at 14. And that's okay.

And it's also okay that that's not what you want - and you're happy with your decision. However, you do sound condescending and that sort of makes you a dick. Maybe she's happy with her life. Or maybe she's not, but her lifestyle is a symptom of something (not fandom).

What I'm saying is: choose the life path that makes you happy, but don't bring others down in your wake.

I wonder how many people read this secret and thought, "Shit, this secret is about me"? (Even if they aren't a really BNF.)

You said she was a nice and fun person. Despite being fat, unemployed and living with her parents, (who cares if she is fat.) is she still nice and fun. If so, why do you care? Does her unemployment affect you? Does her being fat affect you? Does her living with her parents affect you? No? Again, then why care?

As a thirty something trying to find work in this shit economy, why don't you go play in some traffic because you sound like a whiny tumblr teen. At least there'd be one less person to compete with in the job market.

I don't ever want to learn anything personal about the authors of the fic I read. I don't want to see your pic. I don't want to know anything.

Because I once learned that the author of a VERY hot fic was a virgin. Like, in her 20s, never been kissed, no immediate prospects. I couldn't handle my illusion being shattered like that.

When I found out the Monkees didn't sing their own songs for the most part, I was equally shattered...and I came DECADES after The Monkees, so it wasn't like it wasn't public knowledge by that time. I don't want to know too many personal details about things. I like being blissfully unaware about certain things.

It's so fucking true though.

The BNF's that I've known are the fangirl stereotype that you've described. Fandom is healthiest when it's done as a hobby, and not as an obsession or the only thing in your life.

lunabee34: (fancrone by chinashop)

[personal profile] lunabee34 2014-05-21 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I always think three things when I see sentiments like these expressed.

1. I've been to a handful of fan conventions like Writer Con that were entirely about fans meeting each other rather than celebrity guests, I've met many of the people on flist/circle in RL, and many of my flist/circle have posted pictures of themselves. The body types represented seem to be pretty much the same ratio of what I see in RL. I've got some internet friends who are thin and some who are overweight and some who are old enough to be my mama with all the wrinkles that might entail. There's no One True Fan Body.

2. I think that many people who invest a lot of time in fandom want to be BNFs, or if not BNFs then to get a satisfying response to the fanworks they make or the discussions they start. I know I do. One of the things I've learned over the last ten years in fandom is that in general, the people who become BNFs or some version of that are the people who can afford for whatever reason to spend the most time on the internet. They get the episode coda out there before anyone else. Their fic is epic in length because they have more writing time. I think the response you get in fandom is often directly proportional to the responses you give others, so these people are frequently and quickly commenting on other people's posts and linking to them and reccing things. I think many of us think that if we were just able to spend more time on the internet interacting in fandom than we could increase our social cache. I think sometimes it's a bit of sour grapes to imagine that the people who get three pages of comments on how cute their cat is when she sneezes are able to be online all the time because they're losers in some way.

3. I think about how much wider and wonderful the world is for people who are disabled or who are homebound for other reasons than it used to be. I think about how much wider and wonderful the world is for *me* than it used to be. I never imagined as a kid that I'd have an adulthood in which I regularly interact with people who live halfway across the world. I never imagined an adulthood in which I could literally spend every single day of my life reading cool stuff for free without leaving my home. And I think how the quality of life has increased for people everywhere as a consequence.
