I sed to think a bit like you OP - that most other people in fandom were, in short, pathetic losers with no life who I would never want to be like when I 'grew up'.

And then I 'grew up' and realised that actually people who, as bonafide adults in their 20s and 30s persisted in carving out their own little niche in some 'nerdy', 'geeky' or some other intrinsically embarrassing hobby or interest were actually pretty damn brave, as well as basically having their head screwed on right when it came to finding their own slice of happiness in this world. And that maybe the second hand embarrassment they'd induced in me when I was younger was really a holdover from my own immaturity when I'd internalised the high school clique mentality of looking at the world (you can't be a 'cool kid' ie successful if you're a 'geek', so don't even try.)

There are moochers and entitled jerkbags in any area of life, OP. And there are also people who, for reasons beyond their control, are unemployed and/or living with their parents. Fandom doesn't have the monopoly on this. But fandom does have a high proportion of interesting, talented, funny people - maybe you should start appreciating those aspects of fandom, even if they come with a side of chicken nuggets.
