Is Teen Wolf an example of beautiful prose, raw emotion, and compelling characterization???

(Anonymous) 2014-05-21 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know about the show, but I've read some fic, which is what this secret is about, that certainly was.

In a certain, specific sense, yes.

In another, truer sense, no.

Some fandoms just inspire people differently.

I am always really disappointed by the fanfic choices in SPN. I know the show is nothing but a repetitive shadow of itself at this point, but damn. I wish there was decent fic.

Really? I feel like I've seen some great stuff there.

I've actually read a few really good SPN fics. Not as many as, say, HP. But there are some good ones. One of my favorite pwps in from the SPN fandom. (That's high praise for me because I don't have favorite pwps.)

Also different fandoms have different demographics watching them...slightly, at least. For example, some fandoms definitely have more Mary Sue/author wish fulfillment than others.

Can you be more specific about what you're looking for?? I'm just curious because there is so so much SPN fic- is there some kind of ubiquitous fanon detail or common story trope that annoys you? I can see how it would be hard if you're looking for long plotty stories, but that's not the only kind of fic out there.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-21 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess it depends on what you're looking for. I've read some brilliant Rumbelle stories.

Isn't Teen Wolf from the same channel that gave us such gems as Jersey Shore and Teen Mom? I have a hard time imagining it inspiring anything.

I dunno, man. A lot of fic in Teen Wolf fandom is pretty awesome but a lot of the really good fics read more like original fiction; I don't really recognize the characters that are being portrayed.

I feel you bro. I've read some ok stories in OUAT fandom but I don't think any of them actually stuck with me enough that I fave'd them. (...actually I might have fave'd one that was pretty bad, just because the theme was one I really like and didn't see any more of. Where's all the goopy AU family fic with Hook and little Bae?)

(Anonymous) 2014-05-22 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
What kind(s) of fic are you looking for, OP? Depending on what you want, I might be able to help rustle up something.
Also, where's the OUAT fic rec thread that this secret should inevitably create? If there isn't one already, can this be it?

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2014-05-22 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I suspect the problem writing OUAT fic is the same problem that OUAT had starting with Season 2. How do you keep the drama flowing when you're working with adaptations of adaptations of characters who were not in the same stories, some of whom got less that a modern short-story?

Sondheim made it work by killing half the characters in an apocalyptic Act 2, but that's Stephen Fucking Sondheim

(Anonymous) 2014-05-22 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
There's good and bad in every single fandom. Sometimes the bad stuff is promoted while the great stuff is harder to find. Other times, the opposite is true. It also depends on what you ship -- if the canon keeps adding more and more problematic elements to a potential pairing, then fanfic writers have to choose between abandoning canon or climbing out further on a limb with explanations for stuff. And with either choice comes the time-consuming task of defending the pairing and/or your artistic choices, which speeds up the burnout time. I've lurked on the fringes of OuaT and that show is a shining example of exactly that problem.

I have read some really awesome fic in the TW fandom, some a lot better than what the show's writers give us. At the same time, there's a ton of badly-written crap and that's true of most fandoms. Can't speak to OUAT fic as I've never read any.

Oh man, I had to give up on OUAT fic because I'm a Rumple/Belle shipper and the fic is so terrible. SO TERRIBLE. Probably the worst fic of any fandom I've ever been in. I'm not sure how a fandom that produces so much fic can't seem to produce anything of even remotely in-character, but, man. It's bad.

You've got me. I've wondered this about a lot of fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-22 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
YES. SO MUCH. In ouat's case, I'm inclined to say its because of the incredibly inconsistent characterisation and world-building in the actual show (at least post-s2). The best fic I've read from the fandom are AUs - either canon divergent, non-magic, or just general AUs. The canon world is just too poorly constructed :/

(Anonymous) 2014-05-22 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't read too much OUAT fic (thinking of digging deeper though I'm not sure where to start) but it's been decent. Maybe it's because the fic in my main fandom is so horrendous for the most part that I have ridiculously low standards.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-22 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I'm surprised there's any good fic at all in TV fandoms.

Now I want to write a really good OUAT fic and prove you wrong....

Though the fic I've been mulling over writing would be Archie-centric, and therefore most of the fandom wouldn't give a shit. :)

In terms of really good OUAT fics, the ones by amuseoffyre/Fyre are my favorites.

She has written a lot of good OUAT fics and it's really well worth the read. I especially love her rewriting of season 2.

Sadly, due to the s3 finale, she has abandoned the OUAT fandom (myself included).

I'm probably too late, but OP, if you're still looking for fics, I have some pretty excellent recs.

I've never read a good Captain Swan or Rumbelle fic, though, and most of the stuff that isn't Regina-centric or Swan Queen is negligible. Terribly written ships breed terribly written fic, it seems.
