Well, me too. He's adorable, means well. Yeah, sometimes he insults people but it's always accidental because he frequently puts his foot in his mouth. And although he sometimes seems really stupid, I don't think he actually IS. He just gets so excited and distracted that he often comes across like an idiot. But he's successful, and his three kids are all smart when you get past the shallow attitudes or the goofy exterior, so... IMHO he's the most perfect husband that you could ASK for. Obviously not actually perfect, because no one is, but he's about as good as it gets for a committed and loving partner/father who is unquestioningly supportive, provides for his family, and does his best to make every member of it feel valued and loved. He's also totally genuine, which is a nice change from a lot of TV dads.

His genuineness and the love he shows for his family are just the best; Modern Family is the best; it has its flaws but I love it so much.

I agree. And there are occasionally episodes that piss me off, where I feel that the writers have messed up something that the characters wouldn't have been so heavy-handed about. (In particular I hated the first episode with Jay meeting Cam's dad, which struck me as sexist in many points and didn't HAVE to be that way...)

But the vast majority of the show is great, I have only a few complaints (especially for how many seasons the show has gone already) and they really do address issues that other shows are afraid to, especially concerning gay couples and their families. I think they manage to make these things understated enough that they don't get a huge wave of hate for it, which is impressive on its own. Really though I love seeing family conflicts treated with sympathy. Hopefully they don't veer into soap-opera dramatics anytime soon!

I agree--hard--with everything you just said. My first impression was that he's goofy, but then the more I watched, the more I wished I could find a partner like Phil Dunphy.

I kind of think that every crappy male friend who complains that a girl has put them in the 'friend zone' should try a little harder to be like Phil. Obviously he's fictional and it's probably difficult to be like him in practice (esp with the particular traits boys are raised to embody) but he really is the 'nice guy' that women want to be with. He might not be some sex icon, but he's absolutely presented as a familial ideal in a lot of ways. His worldview is spelled out pretty clearly when he interacts with Andy (Joe's nanny), who shares Phil's mentality about women and relationships. Even Hayley, who you'd never expect to be looking for anything but a pretty boyfriend, is starting to recognize that she wants a partner who respects and loves her, regardless of what SHE can do for THEM. Because Phil raised her to expect it.

Me too, OP. As the first anon put it, despite his flaws, he's still adorable, well meaning, genuine, and has a positive disposition. I'd kill to have a husband like that.

Personally, I'd kind of hate being married to someone who'd make me have to be the uber-responsible person to compensate for his flakiness, and his hugely awkward crush on Gloria would get way under my skin.

On the other hand, he seems to have a fairly good relationship with his wife, so more power to you.

Whatever floats your boat. I find him kind of boring TBH, but I confess that most of the time when I watch the show I fast-forward through any parts that don't feature Jay, Gloria, or Manny because they're the only characters I like. Doing so also minimizes my exposure to that irritating jerky camera work. Seriously, I wish they'd knock that off.

For all his goofiness and flaws, I love that he's not the stereotypical Doofy TV Husband who can't even tie his own shoes and is married to a woman who seems to hold him in contempt. Phil and Claire are not perfect, but they're both still great and you don't spend your time wondering why they're married or how Phil even made it into adulthood.
