I don't mind epilogues, but - I just hate that this one specifically left pretty much zero upto the imagination.

This. I like endings that aim the reader in a certain direction without hammering out every last detail of the characters lives.

Like the Animorphs? Some were unhappy, some were happy, some were just "fuck everything" some were taken over buy goddamn alien entities...some were dead...

The Animorph ending was an abomination. All the author had to do was end it with Jake in therapy and I would have been happy with the bittersweetness of it all. But noooo.

Eh, over all I didn't mind the ending. I felt each character was where they needed to be at that moment cause each person was different and would handle the end of that war differently. But what happened to Ax? And how he just kind of...dropped them? After being so close to them for, what, 3-6 years? And defending them against even his own people? That pissed me off.

Oh, no, I didn't mind how they drifted apart and were living imperfect lives, and that there was no happy ending, I actually really appreciated that. What got me was the very last mission, it was just so unnecessary (especially what was done to Ax, right there with you). Hell, I would have been okay if it was a cliffhanger against the Yeerks or even Crayak, but tossing in a brand new villain we know nothing about on literally the last page and then saying "haha, the end, suckers!" was just like...why.

When things are too FINAL I have a harder time coming up with fic.

See, it did the opposite for me... where did Ted and Victoire come from? What was Teddy's relationship with Harry's kids? He seems to be close to them, was he literally at their house four days a week? What happened to McGonagall? How did Neville end up teaching at Hogwarts? Not that we're surprised...

This. And also, there was nothing about the actual characters or their adult lives. I would have liked a happy ending that showed us what they did for a living or even something about their family life. But no, we just have these kids we know nothing about and with no characterization.

I had higher hopes for Hermione. That still sort of bugs me.

We got nothing is the problem. The epilogue didn't show us anything about their lives, so we don't know in the books whether Hermione/Ginny were housewives or whether Harry/Ron were househusbands or whatever. What Hermione does according to the interviews is awesome, though, and the one that fits most with what I pictured. I would have liked to see that at least mentioned in the books.

She ends up in magical law working to further the rights of magical creatures.

Ah, that is fitting :)

So there was no information about the things you were interested in and yet it left nothing up to the imagination?

it...did? I felt like it left EVERYTHING up to the imagination...

This. All we came away knowing from that is that 19 years later (or whatever) there were kids. All the stuff in between? Free to make up...until JKR started filling in the blanks elsewhere.
