"endings like that need to be used a whole lot more"

please no. i hate happy-ever-after endings that tie up every end (even those that don't need tying) and pair all the spares in a big, unnecessary sugary package.
i just hate epilogues in general. it's so easy to screw them up.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-21 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Your kind of endings are all over the place. There are practically none of OP's.
rubbertea: joly from les mis side-eyeing you (joly judging people while high)

[personal profile] rubbertea 2014-05-21 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
i didn't even say what my kind of endings was. didn't know being anon gave you mind-reading abilities.

there are actually several endings like harry potter's. digimon had a particularly painful one.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-21 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
This may be shocking, but a shit-ton of people don't like anime and have no fucks to give about Digimon's ending.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-21 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
This may be shocking, but a shit-ton of people don't like overcompensating former weeaboos and have no fucks to give about their aggressive, shoehorned declarations of not liking anime.

They just gave an example of a show that had the kind of ending/epilogue the secretmaker likes and it just so happened to be anime. Chill out.
rubbertea: joly from les mis smoking a pipe and laughing his ass off (joly thats not tobacco is it)

[personal profile] rubbertea 2014-05-21 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
that was the most overly defensive reply i ever got on this com. at least you got that going for you.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-21 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Let me amend that, then. Endings that aren't happy ever after, don't tie up ever loose end, and don't turn everything into a "sugary package" are all over the place. Particularly in media aimed at adults. I imagine OP has a very difficult time finding endings they like, yet endings for people who like being punched in the gut or prefer as much realism as possible are everywhere.

And yet grim "ultrarealistic" endings are still touted as subversive. At this point I don't even know which is more common because everyone seems convinced that the one they like isn't common enough.

Tamer's ending wasn't. The whole season is a bit more somber than the rest of them, but it still was a children's show.

Shit, even Frontier's ending was better than Harry Potter's lol

(Anonymous) 2014-05-22 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
Haaa, yeah, Tamers just an OVA and a CD Drama that utterly contradicted each other re. whether or not the Digimon came back.

Frontier was just... OKAY THE KIDS SAVED THE WORLD, HERE'S AN EPILOGUE TO LET YOU KNOW THAT THEY SOLVED THEIR OWN PROBLEMS AFTERWARDS SOMETIME.

I don't mind epilogues, but - I just hate that this one specifically left pretty much zero upto the imagination.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-21 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I like endings that aim the reader in a certain direction without hammering out every last detail of the characters lives.

Like the Animorphs? Some were unhappy, some were happy, some were just "fuck everything" some were taken over buy goddamn alien entities...some were dead...

When things are too FINAL I have a harder time coming up with fic.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-21 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
See, it did the opposite for me... where did Ted and Victoire come from? What was Teddy's relationship with Harry's kids? He seems to be close to them, was he literally at their house four days a week? What happened to McGonagall? How did Neville end up teaching at Hogwarts? Not that we're surprised...
philstar22: (Neville)

[personal profile] philstar22 2014-05-21 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
This. And also, there was nothing about the actual characters or their adult lives. I would have liked a happy ending that showed us what they did for a living or even something about their family life. But no, we just have these kids we know nothing about and with no characterization.

I had higher hopes for Hermione. That still sort of bugs me.

So there was no information about the things you were interested in and yet it left nothing up to the imagination?

it...did? I felt like it left EVERYTHING up to the imagination...

This. All we came away knowing from that is that 19 years later (or whatever) there were kids. All the stuff in between? Free to make up...until JKR started filling in the blanks elsewhere.

HP didn't pair the spares? There were just the two pairings

*sticks up "Neville and Luna didn't actually get together in the books" sign in thread to be safe*

technically they didn't in the movie either, they just had confirmed feelings from one side (though I thought it was cute)

(Anonymous) 2014-05-23 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm vaguely reminded of the complaints about how unrealistic it was that "all" school couples were still together when, once again, that was just two pairings.
