i didn't even say what my kind of endings was. didn't know being anon gave you mind-reading abilities.

there are actually several endings like harry potter's. digimon had a particularly painful one.

Let me amend that, then. Endings that aren't happy ever after, don't tie up ever loose end, and don't turn everything into a "sugary package" are all over the place. Particularly in media aimed at adults. I imagine OP has a very difficult time finding endings they like, yet endings for people who like being punched in the gut or prefer as much realism as possible are everywhere.

And yet grim "ultrarealistic" endings are still touted as subversive. At this point I don't even know which is more common because everyone seems convinced that the one they like isn't common enough.

exactly. i have nothing much to add to this.

as for the kind of endings i like... honestly, as much as i like gritty media, there's a limit to how much angst i can take, especially with endings. i just like some ambiguity and realism. not every end needs to be tied up. you gotta leave something to the imagination, you know?

I get where you're coming from but personally I'm with the anon below who says that there are plenty of things to wonder about after the HP ending. Though even if there weren't I would like the ending. Maybe I'm just not very picky though. My mom is always complaining about the books I give her to read because "it just stopped! I want to know more!" So obviously I'm not averse to ambiguity. In fact I like a lot of endings that other people hate because of their ambiguity.

For me, I think what's necessary is a satisfying ending, as in one that addresses the major conflicts of the story, and I don't actually feel like too many shows have truly satisfying endings. Then again, especially on TV, the format makes it almost impossible. Because of the constant season renewals and stuff, it's impossible to plot something that has a truly elegant story-arc that loops neatly at the end with all the symbolism and whatnot.

Some of the ambiguous endings that frustrate me are because it's like the author didn't realize what the actual point was, and didn't solve that, and that annoys me. Then again, I feel like the ending of HP addressed a bunch of points it didn't need to.
for the record, I loved the ending of Inception, because that worked perfectly.

Ugh, I hear you on the constant season renewals. I think a lot of shows would be so much better if they had a clear story arc with a beginning, middle, and end planned out from the start. But no, we have to keep them going as long as possible so they can keep making money.

To be honest, this is the main reason I've stopped watching live-action television. I got tired of shows being dragged out far past when they should have ended for the sake of the story. Either that or canceled partway through.

This. Rowling did a terrible job of tying up ends. And I like my ends tied up. If they're not, I'll invent ties for them. And yes, I get that people prefer it that way, but to me it's just "well if the info isn't there, I'll invent it", but I have to have that info. (And I like at least having something to work with.)

Tamer's ending wasn't. The whole season is a bit more somber than the rest of them, but it still was a children's show.

Shit, even Frontier's ending was better than Harry Potter's lol

Haaa, yeah, Tamers just an OVA and a CD Drama that utterly contradicted each other re. whether or not the Digimon came back.

Frontier was just... OKAY THE KIDS SAVED THE WORLD, HERE'S AN EPILOGUE TO LET YOU KNOW THAT THEY SOLVED THEIR OWN PROBLEMS AFTERWARDS SOMETIME.
