"endings like that need to be used a whole lot more"

please no. i hate happy-ever-after endings that tie up every end (even those that don't need tying) and pair all the spares in a big, unnecessary sugary package.
i just hate epilogues in general. it's so easy to screw them up.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-21 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Your kind of endings are all over the place. There are practically none of OP's.

I don't mind epilogues, but - I just hate that this one specifically left pretty much zero upto the imagination.

I actually like it to, though I could have done without "Albus Severus". That was a "really?" moment for me. After everything else Snape had done to you, you named your kid after him?

Fair enough. I don't have a strong opinion on the epilogue, but the hate it gets seems excessive to me.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-21 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
My only problem with the names is, did Harry and Ginny really have to name 2/3 of their kids after both of Harry's parents? Not only are there the inevitable incest connotations, it just looks selfish of Harry.

I like endings like that
. But the hp endings are just bad

(Anonymous) 2014-05-21 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I like happy endings, even happily-ever-after endings when it fits the story. But there's a difference between a fairytale happy ending and an ending so artificially perfect that it breaks suspension of disbelief.

I didn't hate the ending, and I sort of liked seeing where the characters ended up, but it was written in a very heavy handed way, and I'm sorry, those names were godawful. I can see James and Lily being names, I can see Albus. But anything after that was ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-21 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I just don't know why some HP fans expected a somber, Les Mis-esque ending. I never thought that would happen, because it's not JKR's style. I do think we could've used to have seen more of the aftermath, but on the other hand, aftermaths of wars are... not pretty. What happened after probably amounted to years of further strife and trying to pick up.

So, yeah. I liked the epilogue.

I HATE "lol lets pair everyone off together and make them all straight and have 2.5 kids no matter how unrealistic and fake it sounds." endings. I have a lot of problems with Harry Potter, and that ending is definitely in my top 3.

[personal profile] nan 2014-05-21 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
ngl, when I first read the book, I wasn't moaning over the ending being stupid, I was bawling my eyes. It was only later when I wasn't flying on an emotional high that I stopped and realized that, well. It just wasn't very good. I like happy endings and I think the idea was good (coming full circle, Harry dropping his kids off the board the train) but the exection was off. It went from sweet to saccharine and was really clumsily handled, I think.

But, I definitely agree that happy endings are pretty great in general and I much prefer them to sad endings. ;3;

I didn't like it but for me it was just a little 'too perfect' and came off as corny instead. Also the names for those kids man, they were awful.

I generally like happy endings but I just think that jk did a shit job of writing hers. Sadly I am on the blegh hp epilogue bandwagon. I liked Ron and Hermione's kids' names but not Harry's.

I wouldn't say I loved the epilogue. I didn't hate it? I had a few issues with it, though. It left pretty much every end that wasn't about the main four characters totally loose (except Neville's job, and I liked that bit actually). I feel like we could have done with less of the Dream Team and more of what was going on with other people.

I neither loved nor hated the names, either. It's the wizarding world, all the names are weird.

My biggest bone with the epilogue was how it was executed in the movie. Only the men looked like they'd aged at all, and that wasn't by very much. I honestly kinda wish they'd left the epilogue out of the movie - it left a weird taste after the story was wrapped up pretty well (I though, despite a few reservations) on screen.

I just felt the ending before the epilogue was such a SOLID ending that I wish it hadn't come about... more like tell us about it later like you have been doing. He ended with Ron and Hermoine--just the three of them. It was perfect.

I generally hate the idea that you have to be married with children to fulfill some kind of ultimate life goal, and that's how the epilogue read to me. So yeah, I didn't like that very much.
ceebeegee: (Default)

[personal profile] ceebeegee 2014-05-22 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed, OP, I love the ending. It makes me cry, I love the "autumn had come early this year," the sense that fall always gives me, that yes, another year has turned and here we are again. Something so...heartbreakingly beautiful, and comforting, in that sameness, that reiteration, the leaves are coloring, the chill has come, we're making our way to the train and this time the kids are a little bit older and a grade past. This time my *second* kid is getting on the train, and now he's worried about the hat. I sobbed when I first read it. All Harry ever wanted was a family. After what he'd been through, after *all* he'd suffered--he didn't want riches, didn't want gold or fame or political connections. All he ever wanted was a family, to make up for the fact that his first eleven years were spent in emotional poverty. And here he is.

All was well.

I loved it.

The only thing I didn't like was that Harry named his son after fucking Snape. And Dumbledore.

But tying up the ending does not always make a happy ending. I like tied up loose ends, or 'loose ends' which lead the reader to some logical conclusion, because I prefer philosophy over pointless realism...

(Anonymous) 2014-05-23 11:46 am (UTC)(link)
You're right OP. I used to hate the epilogue, but you're right, endings like that are underrated. And the names, I love them!
