A ubiquitous surveillance state that most of us happily consent to and participate in seems more Brave New World than 1984 tbh. It still scares the shit out of me, as a geezer-type person who still can't believe that so many people are okay with this.

This. Although much of the social engineering going on to make people less reliant on themselves and more on government fits well onto the 1984 spectrum of things as well.
