Exactly this. I sometimes copy other people's fics to a Word document privately for this reason. A few times, with permission, I've mirrored a fic on my own journal.

A lot of LJ journals get suddenly deleted by their owners. I've lost a lot of fics I loved.

It's unnerving, but if they left a link to your original fic post, and were careful to acknowledge that it was yours, it's kind of flattering.
