Op here. See that's part of what makes it even harder for me. I was also suicidal (though, I was mostly getting better by the time I met my friend). And by that I mean: I did actually do it - but I was young and bad at killing myself, and I came back from it. Which is actually still a more traumatic experience for me than I admit to most people.

But, I actually didn't agree to some treatment, because personally I feel like there are worse things than dying. One of those things is not being yourself anymore (to me). Obviously this is a very difficult, personal thing to ponder and many people have different feelings about it.

But, that's what makes it even harder for me: in a not-so-different alternate version of the past, that could have been me, if my consent had bee overridden. And that just horrifies me all the more.

It's awful that your friend was given this treatment without her consent. (Frankly, I'm not a big fan of any major medical intervention being given without consent when it's possible to seek it. That goes double for something with side effects as serious as electroshock!)

However, whenever the subject comes up there are going to be people who are (like the commenter above) horrified that electroshock is still practised, and I always like to point out that there are people who have benefited from it, like my dad.
