It's awful that your friend was given this treatment without her consent. (Frankly, I'm not a big fan of any major medical intervention being given without consent when it's possible to seek it. That goes double for something with side effects as serious as electroshock!)

However, whenever the subject comes up there are going to be people who are (like the commenter above) horrified that electroshock is still practised, and I always like to point out that there are people who have benefited from it, like my dad.
