Ha! I've never seen the show, but this just strikes me as really funny, and now I want to watch it.

Oh man. If you like h/c...

Starsky and Hutch! OMG <3 I love them so.

Awesome show! Horrible fandom.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-23 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Really? I always thought this show had one of the best fandoms ever. Low-drama but spirited and not too sugar-sweet. Especially the "old guard" as opposed to all the happy-happy-joy-joy newer fans.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-23 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
How so? It seems like just an older show fandom to me.

Starsky & Hutch: the hurt/comfort mother lode. The canon, let alone the fic. Also most crime/cop related tropes, though I don't think they went undercover as a couple in canon? I think I half remember them inviting a girl to a threesome in canon, and then walking off together when she said no, but that could have been me imagining things.

But, yes. H/C Central Canon, better believe it.

Oh yeah. Hell, the whole reason I discovered this show in the first place was from my interest getting piqued while reading the history of the hurt/comfort genre on fanlore.org.

That happened. They were both dating her, and after they found out and fought about that, they proposed "both or neither" at the episode end. Then they walked off together.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-23 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Well, actually only Starsky was dating her. Hutch was just flirting with her in front of Starsky. And then slept with her right after Starsky mentioned that he was in love with her. Fans can't agree on whether he had been sleeping with her before that as well, or whether that makes it better or worse.

Yeah, there's a reason that fans are *still* trying to explain wtf was going through Hutch's head in that episode 35 years later...

My formative (fangirl) years, let me show them to you. Probably explains why I enjoy writing h/c so much.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-23 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
It hasn't happened yet, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up watching Starsky & Hutch because of Fandom Secrets.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-23 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
that's how I found myself there.

Have fun. :-)

Doctor Livingston, I presume? How are you finding things here? :)

(Anonymous) 2014-05-23 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
You mean the hurt/comfort right? Yeah, there isn't, never has been, and never again will be, a single show that does h/c better than this show did h/c.

This also reminds me about how at some point I need to get around to writing that long meta essay about how season 4 was all about S & H being completely exhausted by the stress and fear and overprotectiveness all that hurt/comfort caused for them, and briefly forgetting that the benefits of their friendship outweighed its costs.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-23 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
After you've finished watching the show, you should also check out the records of some of the old letterzines to find out the origins of how these tropes were first interpreted by fandom ;) It overlaps a lot with Star Trek TOS, so if you're also a fan of that, you're in luck.

:D
This is such a special show. It was a very healing place for me for a time when I really needed it. Many others have experienced this same thing. Wallow away -- it really is good for the soul to soak up the love from this show

Yes. For me as well. It's just one of those things, you know? Something that has a premise - there's two guys, they go through all kinds of shit and danger and misfortune, and are always, always, always at each other's sides every step of the way, no matter what - and it is just so completely devoid of artifice or cowardice or slipperiness about playing that premise 100% straight, no qualifiers.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-23 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
That is such a fantastic way of describing it.
esteefee: Early Starsky & Hutch in black and white. They both have short hair and Starsky is staring at the camera like hes in the Office (molo)

[personal profile] esteefee 2014-05-23 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely. Since it was my first fandom (in 2004), I didn't realized until later how rare it was to have a show that didn't constantly reinforce "but I'm not gay!" or give winks to the audience or whatever. It's just honest devotion and love between these two guys.

Glad you found 'em, OP!
