To be fair, the 2013 anime was terrible so I can see why it put people off the manga.

I'm definitely in the minority on this, but I actually really love it, terribly rushed first episode, cliffhanger ending, and all (I'm not surprised you think it's terrible, though). I felt it more accurately depicted what the manga is like compared to the first anime, which was mostly comedy in the first season and action in the second. Not to say that these elements aren't present in the manga, 'cause they are, but I've always liked the manga for its focus on the characters and their development, which I feel the first anime didn't have enough of. Of course, the comedy and action in the first anime was what made so many people fans in the first place, so...

......... Why was it horrible for you? I believed it was fantastic and way better than the earlier one. Maybe a little bad in terms of pacing, but really good anyway.

the 2013 anime would have probably been more popular if they hadn't decided to shove the entire first arc of the manga into the first episode, making it near impossible to follow if you were coming in as a new fan or even someone who'd only watched the old anime

i'm still holding out hope that yen press or someone will re-release the manga, though (including the tales)

That, and the fact that so many websites listed it as "season 3" when it wasn't a sequel to the first anime at all, which undoubtedly confused and frustrated those who've only seen the first one. I saw many comments asking things like "why doesn't Suigintou despise Shinku as much?" and "Suigintou would never willingly take a Medium", not realizing that this anime doesn't follow the first one's continuity.

I hope so, too, because the fan translations range from "decent" to "god-awful." I'm not fluent in Japanese, but I know enough to know that whoever translated a good chunk of the Tales chapters did a poor job. This is a series that could really use an official translation. Since the 2013 anime is getting released on DVD/Blu-ray this summer by Sentai Filmworks, there might be a chance that a company will license the Tales chapters at the very least.

OP, I feel you so much. I was really, REALLY excited with the 2013 anime and I actually liked it a lot. Still, as I've read on your comments above, it's true the first episode ruined it for many :/ I told my younger brother to watch it and he dropped it bc of it.
I really loved it anyways, it was the anime Rozen Maiden deserved so hardly and I'm so sad not many picked it up, not even people who saw the first animes orz I had no one to fangirl with, sob

Yeah, I did like the slower pace of the newest series (crazy first episode aside) but I can see how people who specifically liked the old anime might not have been into it so much. Mostly I'm just frustrated that the old series ended on a cliffhanger, then the old manga ended on a cliffhanger, then they made a new anime based on the newer manga that also ended on a cliffhanger oh my god can anything in this franchise be allowed to end properly.
