My English teacher said that people need another group of people to hate to function.

While I don't think it's entirely true for everyone, when I look at a fandom setting where people hate other people over the pettiest things, I think there's a bit of truth to it.

John Carmack once said that "at its best, entertainment is going to be a subjective thing that can't win for everyone, while at worst, a particular game just becomes a random symbol for petty tribal behavior."

Which reminds me of this article.

It's stupid as hell, but you know what? I think I'd rather have people hating each other over their gaming platform preference than their gender or skin color or orientation.

A+. Ship wars don't often lead to IRL trauma. Not that both are mutually exclusive, but in an ideal world...
