Words that have stuck with you

(Anonymous) 2014-05-22 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Stuff that people (not necessarily famous) that have stuck with you for one reason or another.

My English teacher said that people need another group of people to hate to function.

While I don't think it's entirely true for everyone, when I look at a fandom setting where people hate other people over the pettiest things, I think there's a bit of truth to it.

John Carmack once said that "at its best, entertainment is going to be a subjective thing that can't win for everyone, while at worst, a particular game just becomes a random symbol for petty tribal behavior."

Which reminds me of this article.

It's stupid as hell, but you know what? I think I'd rather have people hating each other over their gaming platform preference than their gender or skin color or orientation.

A+. Ship wars don't often lead to IRL trauma. Not that both are mutually exclusive, but in an ideal world...

Those motivational posters, the one by Winston Churchill: "Never Never Never Give Up"

Totally random lines from TV shows. "Homicide: Life on the Streets" had an episode dealing with a serial killer on I-95. I still remember the lines at the point when the real killer tells Bayliss that he captured the wrong guy. That and a ton of MST3K lines.

5 will get you 10… something my mother says a lot!

Most of Deus Ex (the original) is a bunch of sociology papers on legs talking in paragraphs, but there's one line about a third of the way through that resonated with me, even back in my proto-libertarian days when I didn't know any better:

"Average people never benefit from government and business on a scale they can't even comprehend."

"The first draft is just you telling yourself the story." - Terry Pratchett

My foster father calls me dandelion child* and that stuck with me enough to tattoo dandelions on my body, it is one of the reasons I refuse to give up and why I know I can handle everything, because if a flower can grow in the cracks of concrete I sure as hell can go on.

I am a rock star scientist is the other one, which I think BHG used about Newt, or herself once, at least I connect it to her and I connect to that for some reason.

I appreciate a fine body regardless of the make... is probably the best description of my sexuality I've read, but I can't remember where I got it from.

There is probably quite a few others, but those three are enough for now.
*Which is a legitimate Norwegian expression, but it isn't that common.

Some famous guy: it is better to be hated for what you are, than to be loved for what you are not.

My dad: Just because you can destroy someone with words, you should still know how to use your fists.

Also: Fight with your words before you fight with your fists.

Andy Warhol once said that in the future everyone will have their fifteen minutes of fame. Once I thought that was laughable if not impossible. But the way things work with the internet now and speed at which gossip, news and cat videos turn over, I think he was a prophet.

Involves 9/11...

(Anonymous) 2014-05-23 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
While I was watching the news on 9/11, there was a firefighter about to run into the Twin Towers. The reporter asked him why he was doing it, and I remember these words: "my brothers are in there!"

I always wonder whether or not he survived. :(

My dad recently told me that, no matter what I do, the important thing is to keep moving & keep doing something, instead of giving up before I've even started.

A bunch of stuff in the Sacrifices arc helped me to stop caring so much what other people thought of me. And after my most recent reread I've been remembering that lovely quote about patience in the first few paragraphs of Sandry's Book/The Magic in the Weaving.

There was a poster of a puppy in my elementary school's nurse's office. It said, "When I do good nobody remembers. When I do bad no one forgets."

"Not, I’ll not, carrion comfort, Despair, not feast on thee;
Not untwist—slack they may be—these last strands of man
In me ór, most weary, cry I can no more. I can;
Can something, hope, wish day come, not choose not to be."

this has prevented suicide on more than one occasion.

if i could meet gerard manley hopkins i would wrap him in a bear hug.

The start of Wild Geese by Mary Oliver: "You do not have to be good"

Doctorow: "Writing is like driving at night in the fog. You can only see as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way."

And my high school theatre teacher: "Don't be sorry, be better."

There's a lot of things that have always stuck with me, but this time I'll share just one.

Puddleglum's speech in the Silver Chair has been with me ever since I was a little kid. Of course it says a lot about belief in God specifically, considering the source, but I think it also says a lot of important things about hope and imagination in general.

Here, have some gloriously hammy BBC overacting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wh55SzhLkmc

"High above them both, way up in the blackness, Sputnik kept singing." I honestly have no clue what it's from, but it has stuck in my mind for years. It's not as meaningful as most of the rest of them, but it's just lyrically pretty to me.

On driving a stick shift up a steep hill from a dead stop: "You just have to tromp down on the gas, let up on the clutch, and hang on."

Not joking, that's been great life advice.
