Probably because the tumblr fandom for the game doesn't generally head out much. Everything is new and terrible and shiny, so sticking them into F!S would be like throwing them in a vat of oil (even though we're tame). /generalize /:U

Not really related, but I fucking love Tales games. They're so shitty, but so fun to play. Abyss is probably my favourite for having the most detail into how nonsensical rpg shit worked, as well as the most characters I enjoy and remember (and not remember for hating constantly). I don't jive well with the fandom though ofc.

I loved Abyss. Still kinda a bs ending though.

Really? I remember Abyss as being the Tales game where I hated every cast member. They didn't seem badly written so much as they grated on my nerves too much to be worth it. Tales games tend to have shitty plot with good characters (if sometimes shallow) and usually fun gameplay, they aren't really ~deep~ or anything.

Yep. I was under the impression it was one of the more popular ones too. Eternia on the psp is a close second for me.

I look at the cast as cookie cutter shapes that can make or grate the experience, and the stories as ignorable at best, so you're pretty much on the mark there.

I feel you. Tales gameplay is really fun for me, but I think they're mediocre at best for story, even if I end up liking a game. The reason I bought Symphonia HD recently is because the GC one played like comfort food to me when it came out. I keep quiet about it in general JRPG fandom, since most people I know keep jumping ship to Tales Of games as their choice franchise and complaining about how far all the other ones have fallen, or how terrible WRPGs are, etc. Abyss also still seems like the favorite, even with Vesperia around.

The skit system's also neat, even if I hate the characters in a game. I was happy to see it pop up in some other things recently.

Franchise defensiveness is why I don't mesh well. I know fans of other properties do it too, but Tales fanbase has a weird japanophile-like air to it at times when you try to talk about it as a game.

Skits are like brief fic snippets of fic for me, so they were usually a treat.

I haven't noticed that? Some of them are very... yeah regarding japan though, and a bit (a lot) over obsessed, but not all like TALES IS THE ONLY GOOD THING EVER. Maybe I just hang out with decent people? I've noticed a whole fuckton of the fandom is super fragile and sensitive at times, but I tend to draw my perspectives more from tumblr which leans that way anyhow.

Yep. I think the weirdest part was that the people I knew never even tried other franchises before stopping at Tales, but they were still complaining. They hadn't even tried Persona, which seemed like the perfect obsession for the loud minority. I'm sure the sane fans play a ton of different things.

Same!
