Really? I remember Abyss as being the Tales game where I hated every cast member. They didn't seem badly written so much as they grated on my nerves too much to be worth it. Tales games tend to have shitty plot with good characters (if sometimes shallow) and usually fun gameplay, they aren't really ~deep~ or anything.

Yep. I was under the impression it was one of the more popular ones too. Eternia on the psp is a close second for me.

I look at the cast as cookie cutter shapes that can make or grate the experience, and the stories as ignorable at best, so you're pretty much on the mark there.
