Re: Stuff you're not hyped for...
I think I've talked about ASToM once. Basically, I have a profound dislike for every single aspect of the production, from the moronic plot idea to the fact that Sir Ian McKellen is about to play Holmes. God, he might just end up surpassing Tom Baker as the worst SH casting mistake ever made.
And Arthur&George... Julian Barnes just isn't good. He really isn't. He had amazing material and he botched it by turning it into a story that manages to be simultaneously very bland and very weird.
Re: Stuff you're not hyped for...
By the way, why do you think that Sir Ian McKellen as Holmes is a casting mistake?
Re: Stuff you're not hyped for...
IMO, McKellen is just... all wrong. His appearance is in no way Holmes-esque; his character "type" has nothing to do with Holmes; and, quite frankly, I am unable to believe that he could play a character that isn't just wise but almost preternaturally clever. Playing a clever character isn't just spewing out random deductions. You must be able to play a complex intellectual process, and Sir Ian McKellen doesn't strike me as someone who can do that. He'll go for the "old wise Holmes" image, and that's not going to be Holmes, it'll be another Gandalf. People have said he isn't exactly the sharpest crayon in the box himself, so that might be it.
