I know right, it's a shame that people aren't completely open to my fic where Anakin Skywalker was a trans goth girl growing up in Cincinatti in the 90s as the youngest of 10 children.
It's such an interesting interpretation of canon!

Well, it's not really for me to say, because I didn't like Anakin very much in the movies and I fell out of love with Star Wars shortly after Revenge of the Sith came out. So my feelings about this imaginary Anakin are those of a non-fan, or I guess a former fan, and not really relevant. Probably I shouldn't have said anything. But since you asked. . .

I liked a very abstracted, high-level version of Anakin's character arc (highly gifted young cleric/warrior, forbidden love, temptations of power and vengeance, eventual destruction of self) better than I liked the specifics of how it played out in the movies, and a lot of the worldbuilding in I-III left me cold. So there's kind of a basic appeal in saying, "Well, that was a mess. Let's rewrite this from the ground up -- no, really, from the ground."

There's also a strong appeal for me in seeing Anakin transplanted to an AU that to some extent would force the story to play out differently. I'd enjoy seeing what the author did with the radically different setting and character circumstances and what they were able to keep -- if they could make the case for this character being Anakin in some meaningful way, it would be a really cool feat (And I think Anakin is a pretty good name for a trans goth girl, tbh).

And the teenage goth girl in the 90s, in Cincinnati, with a big family? That's not a description of me, but its a description with a lot of very strong empathy hooks for me. Plus, as a Midwesterner who was a teenager in the 90s, I'd probably enjoy a lot of the details, especially if there was some effort to merge Star Wars worldbuilding with 90s Cincinnati worldbuilding in a creative or funny way.

Ok, it's possible for it to be terrible. It's probably extremely likely to be terrible. But it still sounds like a fun challenge and if it were done well, I think I'd really enjoy it.

Yeah okay so I apparently managed to hit your hot buttons because I have never even been in Cincinnati and I don't know the first thing about it.

I personally dislike piggybacking, and I hate when people want to tell some random story that nobody would really care about, so they use a few well-known names and bam, people care. I hated it when it was called Wicked, and it annoys me when it's a random AU set in a random place with random plot details because that's what I did, I typed up random shit without thinking about it for even 0.02 seconds.

(also personally, what attracted me about Star Wars is the um, STAR WARS. as in you've got STARS and they are WARRING. If I wanted teen drama in the US I'd go read YA fiction)

For me, if I want to read original fiction, I go read original fiction. If I want to read fanfiction, then I want it to be recognizably about these characters. All this stuff that's "fanfiction" but with barely the flimsiest connection to the canon holds no interest for me.

More power to you if you like it; there are plenty of fics for you to read, far more than for me.

That's fair enough and makes perfect sense. I'm sorry to ramble so much; I just like AUs. I hope you get more good fanfiction to read soon.

FWIW, I love a good AU as well, as long as the characterization a are correct. I think your ramble here is a really neat and thoughtful idea.
