X-Men Days of Future Past

I saw it today and really liked it. Anyone wanna talk about it?

I liked it a lot overall!

There were a couple of things that just felt a little unbalanced to me.

-Peter Dinklage's character Trask. I felt like I couldn't quite hone in on his real motivation. I honestly thought they were going to go the "I'm a dwarf, kind of like a mutant, but not in a good way, fuck mutants with badass powers" route - which was way cliche, if appropriate to the storyline, and I'm kind of glad they didn't do that. Still, I didn't quite get enough out of him to understand him as a villain or a person. Which sucked because his assassination, and Mystique's hatred for him, ended up being the climax of the story.
-I didn't even quite know what the climax would be. At first, I thought the movie would focus on the ex-friends now-enemies gay-subtext (what?) relationship between Erik and Charles, because that's how the movie started. But then Erik went off to do his own thing and that plot seemed dropped completely. There was just a very brief future scene where they lament fighting so often, and clasp hands, but it didn't really feel that meaningful to me, or merit abandoning the spotlight on their relationship.
-I couldn't quite tell if Mystique being such a main character was really the best thing for the story, or if it was just because Jennifer Lawrence is so popular right now. I liked her, but her motivation also wasn't... shown enough? It's all kind of explained with exposition, her friends dying, rather than actually seeing her anger. The relationship with Charles was a little better, she resents him controlling her, but when her shooting Trask was the climax I was hoping to see her reasons built up a little more. Maybe actually seeing Trask killing a mutant would have made it flow together better.
-I loved Ellen Paige, but wish she had a bigger role.

One good thing about this movie is that any future Wolverine movies won't include him moping about Jean. Woo!

I agree with all the stuff you said, especially Trask's motivation. Sure, he wanted to kill mutants, but no solid reason beyond "they're different, must kill!" was shown.

There should always be more Ellen Page.

There has been a lot of talk about Mystique having her own movie, so I think her being the focus was a combination of that and Jennifer's popularity. I thought they did a good job with her motivation, although it heavily relied prior knowledge of her life and putting together the pieces rather than showing specific examples.

I loved the Charles and Erik scenes, but yeah, the writers kinda dropped the ball later in the movie. I was hoping they'd be working together in the new future but we got nothing.

lol, true. She and Scott were a nice surprise.

Did you stay for the scene after the credits?

He gave his motivation, though. He wanted to use them to unite the world. If everyone had a common enemy, they would join together to fight it. He said he didn't hate mutants.

I thought Trask's motivation was strongly implied to be a sort of primal, irrational fear with the species extinction that kept coming up in his scenes - he specifically used a few lines about it to make his point in one meeting and later talked about humans uniting together against extinction.

true, I think I just didn't get where that was coming from. But as you said, it was irrational.

I just watched it today, loved it, and I have thoughts about the plot and characters. Overall though, right now, I'm just annoyed by the throw away deaths of minor characters from First Class. Like, every side character from that movie with the exception of Alex and the few we were following this movie were dead and dissected by 1973. I'm a little pissed that was thrown in there. I liked Azazel, Angel, and Banshee, dammit.

I was more sad than pissed, but yeah. I especially liked Banshee.

i went out thinking that everything bad that happened in the film was pretty much Erik's fault

if he wasn't such a stubborn douchebag, all of it could have been prevented

also there were a TON of slashy moments with Erik and Charles. I wasn't even wearing slash goggles, and I just wanted to shake them and yell: "JUST KISS ALREADY INSTEAD OF FIGHTING!"

I was SO SO HAPPY. So happy. The whole movie was a great balance, exciting and dramatic but never forgetting to include humor...mostly I'm happy it chose NOT to pursue the path of greatest angst! The main reason I've always been a DC rather than Marvel comics fan was that I hated the way Marvel comics always seemed to go out of their way to make their heroes miserable and persecuted; the way this one had persecution and hard times, yes, but also hope and a happy ending, made me so happy and relieved. I want to see it 20 more times and I want fandom to get on the stick writing fluffy gen fic right the heck now, please and thank you.

My favorite humorous part was Quicksilver. I loved him and wanted so much more!

You think DC is...emotionally lighter than Marvel? In what world?

I really liked it, I just wish the entirety of the movies hadn't been fully retconned. I LOVED the first two films. If Last Stand and Origins had been retconned, but the other three left intact, I'd have been a much happier camper.

But over all, it was good, better than First Class was.

Also, Rogue. WHY did she just have to have ONE fucking cameo? Goddamit. BC

Agreed on Trask's motivation being unclear, but I felt his earnetsness was pretty good. Dinklage did well there.

Originally she had more scenes and a small sub-plot in the film but they had to cut them. They should be on the dvd though
