I'm curious to know what you found so abysmal about his characterization in the Avengers. Personally, I was more put off by how weak and ineffectual Whedon made Cap look. Having seen his badassery in Cap 2, it's downright offensive how nerfed he was in Avengers.

I thought it was a matter of each finding their niche. Cap fought back-to-back with Thor on the ground but, when Thor was called away to use magical powers on the whale-turtles, Cap was calling the shots, protecting individuals, and Inspiring people.

Cap isn't magic. He's just…super-human. That's always been the case in the comics, as well. There's a reason that the big bads often laugh in his face when he faces them. Sometimes, they eat their words because he is enough. Other times, you get things like the Infinity Gauntlet, where he is defeated in less than 3 seconds, but he's changed everything simply by TRYING.

I didn't think Cap was nerfed at all.

This, pretty much. If the only way you can write Steve is "old-fashioned dude who respects the authority" then I don't want you writing him.
