I don't get the popularity of what is basically a nothing-character to me.

I have been wondering about that same thing since 1980.

He followed Han to Cloud City, got to take the carbonized Han back to Jabba after Vader was done with him. He hung around in Jabba's palace doing nothing, then had a jet-pack accident that ended up with him being eaten by a Sarlacc (Darwin Awards, anyone?). Wherever the "badass" version of him sprang from, it wasn't from movies canon.
