That big bald head is so weird and distracting.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Is not. It's awesome and dashing and intimidating.

Sorry first anon, but I agree with this one.

Wondering how many people would think it's okay to comment negatively about the physical appearance of a female lead in a hit show...

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
That depends entirely on the demographics of the side of fandom you hang out in, I think. Guys have zero problem analyzing how acceptable a female character's looks are to them.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-26 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
And it's considered gross and distasteful when guys do it, but...

A lot

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously, a lot. If you've never come across a show where the female lead gets a haircut that people don't like, be thankful.

Haha, there's an anime macro that used to float around 4chan showcasing this very thing. Wish I still had it.

And here I was thinking it was Wesley's pretty anime face that was distracting in a weird way. He kinda looks unreal.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too. But then again, Wesley ended up going off to travel in time with that weirdo alien dude, so maybe it doesn't really matter how much advice and support you get if you've got your heart really set on something you want.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand this comment. Surely the advice and guidance of the crew was instrumental in Wesley becoming the kind of person with the abilities AND desire to pursue that goal?

I'm not the biggest fan of Wesley, but I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't have loved, growing up, a group of adults around me filled me as much compassion and wisdom as the Enterprise crew did for him.

I wonder if you liked Wesley, despite this.

I have a bit of a headcanon that Beverly used to smother him, and that he had no freedom to do the things he really liked instead of working like a grown up officer.

He also probably grew up a bit socially isolated, and coupled with his native intelligence he certainly lacked a few social graces when he was a teenager. But being permitted to become an acting bridge officer in his teens? That shows that Picard at least thought he had promise. :)

That said, even Wil Wheaton has written that if you re-watch the first season it's all too obvious what an annoying little shit Wesley was back then.

I didn't find him particularly annoying. The first season plots are so far fetched and Wesley's so Mary Sueish (or Marty Sueish), that I couldn't take it seriously, so I wasn't annoyed with him.
Well, after all the feats he'd done, Picard had no other choice but apreciate Wesley.

His personality seems a bit lacking. No hobbies, no personal quirks. And his relationship with Beverly wasn't focused on. I liked the bits where Picard was supportive, so I somewhat get OP's meaning.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-05-25 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
And I think the isolated part was not because there were no children his age onboard, but because he focused too much on study/work.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-26 11:28 am (UTC)(link)
No matter what you think of Wesley, that's a horrible headcanon and you're a horrible human being for thinking it.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-26 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Smothering mothers even if they're not so smothering any more, rarely leave their child on a ship because they want to.

Besides, Beverly herself said Wesley was unable to blend with children his age because of his intelligence.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-05-26 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I think too, Wealey's interested in things that other children are not interested in yet.

I'm not sure what you mean in the first line?

Wesley was my favourite part of the show when I was twelve. I guess I just really liked seeing a kid being on a spaceship like a real adult.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, regardless of how people feel about Wesley, you have to admit he had an enviable childhood/young adulthood on many levels...

I know how you feel, OP.
