Yes, this. I filter by kudos to find the best fics!

Except it doesn't guarantee "the best fics", it guarantees the most popular ones. Some of which are dire.

Well yes, but it is a good starting point.

What, and filtering by comments doesn't do this?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I could say no with the case of one of my fics. It's about 16 chapters at this point, and while it has a whole slough of both comments and kudos, it's really only about 20 comment threads from dedicated readers who have commented on each chapter, and who I've had conversations with.

The kudos would be more accurate in that fic's case, certainly.

Dedicated readers who comment may just be the readers who are dedicated enough to comment.

Also, likely they were readers who were reading as the fic was being written, so it's not like they read a dozen chapters in one sitting, rigorously commenting to each chapter - more likely the chapters came out anything from a day to a week apart, so their comments were that far apart as well.

I am speaking here from the experience of a few really good fics I've read and liked enough to comment on (I am not a frequent commenter and have the attitude that if I can't say anything more pithy than "Good fic!" I'm more than likely to not comment at all - so if I comment on a fic, I mention specific details I like).

They are people who comment on almost every chapter as posted, yes. Which is where the problem lies when using comments rather than kudos to judge a story. The fic in question has *goes to check* 137 comments, but that's from only 25ish discrete users. So there are 20 people who love my fic enough to comment each chapter, whereas kudos (at least ones from non-anon users) are a one-time deal.

And that's when I use the back button! It's not perfect, but it works pretty well.
