No I hit the Kudos because I have nothing to say other than 'Great fic ' or some other bland comment. Also I use Kudos to determine what fics to read.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, this. I filter by kudos to find the best fics!

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Except it doesn't guarantee "the best fics", it guarantees the most popular ones. Some of which are dire.

Well yes, but it is a good starting point.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
What, and filtering by comments doesn't do this?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I could say no with the case of one of my fics. It's about 16 chapters at this point, and while it has a whole slough of both comments and kudos, it's really only about 20 comment threads from dedicated readers who have commented on each chapter, and who I've had conversations with.

The kudos would be more accurate in that fic's case, certainly.

Dedicated readers who comment may just be the readers who are dedicated enough to comment.

Also, likely they were readers who were reading as the fic was being written, so it's not like they read a dozen chapters in one sitting, rigorously commenting to each chapter - more likely the chapters came out anything from a day to a week apart, so their comments were that far apart as well.

I am speaking here from the experience of a few really good fics I've read and liked enough to comment on (I am not a frequent commenter and have the attitude that if I can't say anything more pithy than "Good fic!" I'm more than likely to not comment at all - so if I comment on a fic, I mention specific details I like).

They are people who comment on almost every chapter as posted, yes. Which is where the problem lies when using comments rather than kudos to judge a story. The fic in question has *goes to check* 137 comments, but that's from only 25ish discrete users. So there are 20 people who love my fic enough to comment each chapter, whereas kudos (at least ones from non-anon users) are a one-time deal.

And that's when I use the back button! It's not perfect, but it works pretty well.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you know how much I would love love love to see your "Great fic" comment? As an actual comment?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, that's why it's such a circle-jerk. It's so hard to get people to click on your fics when the same ones by the same authors get all the hits and, consequently, more kudos. Having more than about a hundred or two hits on mine is super exciting, and that's not counting the small fandoms. :(

It's true. If filtering by kudos, I would also look at the hit-to-kudos ratio, because some great fics just haven't been "discovered".
Thing is, there isn't really any surefire system to finding good fic, especially in the big fandoms. You can't filter by "decent summary" or "lack of stupid tags"....

Yeah...I read other fics too. In small fandoms I generally read ALL the fic for the character I am interested in. Hell, I just went through over 200 pages of Bucky fanfic on AO3. BUT, when I just want a certain keyword, I can use Kudos to find popular fics with that keyword.

Any recs? :p

(Anonymous) 2014-05-26 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you comment on any of them? :p

Not a writer, but I've kind of noticed that the MCU fandom is one of the worst in terms of comments.
