I love the kudos system. Sometimes I have no clue what to say, so a kudos is so much easier. And I love getting them because it means people like my fic.

It's a good thing in the long run.

OP, I felt this way for a long long time, but I finally came to terms.

Yes Comments > kudos, but at least with a kudo you don't have to wonder if the hit was a "They read and liked it" or a "They started to read but didn't finish because they didn't like it."

No I hit the Kudos because I have nothing to say other than 'Great fic ' or some other bland comment. Also I use Kudos to determine what fics to read.

I love the Kudos system. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside knowing that people liked my fic even if they don't leave a comment.

I'm terrible at commenting so I'm glad the kudos button is there. It tells the author I liked the fic without me having to explain exactly why.

Also, you shouldn't go by the hit count as a measure of anything. That includes people who started reading and, for whatever reason, didn't like it and hit the X.

Ah I like kudos. Sometimes lots of "great fic!" etc. comments can leave me wondering how to reply without a ton of generic "thank you!", and the kudos is a concise way of a reader leaving praise/acknowledgement without that.

I like it, because people can express at least a feeling of like even if they're too lazy to write a comment (which, let's face it, I often also am when reading fic).

I just don't know what to say most of the time, and simply saying "I liked it" just doesn't seem like enough. So I leave kudos. Alternatively, I appreciate the kudos system for those who leave them on my fics who may feel the same way and who I wouldn't even get that from on the likes of FFN.

I personally leave kudos because I don't have an Ao3 account and don't write enough fic to warrant getting one and it's a good way for me to say, anonymously, that I am enjoying something.

I love the kudos system because of how quick and easy it is. Comments are more personal and I DO like leaving them, but I just don't do it as much as I should (or used to). Sometimes I have difficulty thinking of what to say so I don't even bother and just give kudos instead. It's a better alternative than no comments and no kudos, imo.

To be fair, OP, if it were comment-only, all of the comments beyond the ones you already have would just be drive-by "Good job! I love it!" or "Thanks for writing, enjoyed it!" or something that essentially just amounts to a kudos. This way it's easier to filter those out, avoid the awkwardness of having to respond to a bunch of those, and save the readers some time.

Sorry to bum you, OP, but the truth is that without the Kudos system, you'd have… a fic with 12 comments and no kudos.

People just don't comment that much on fics. At least, that was the case in the fandoms I've been in.

I know that I, personally, like and prefer a comment, but if someone leaves a kudo, that's fine too. I tend to leave a kudo in particular if there's something about the fic i didn't like, but have no intention whatsoever of unloading my personal 'issue' onto the author. Then, a kudo is good because i'm not tempted to be an asshat.

I hate the kudos system, too. I even have a nice bit of code added that makes the kudos button and that silly graphic vanish completely. It's awesome!

But then, I don't like the hit counts, either. And I'm very annoyed that AO3 still shows them to me, even though I have ticked the "don't show me any hits" box. Hrmpf.

I love getting kudos. I mean, I always hope for comments, especially on new fic, but I also write a lot of random stuff in some obscure fandoms, and kudos are great for making me feel less like it's going silently into a void. A hit means someone clicked on a story, a kudo means they clicked, read, and liked, even if they're too busy or rushed or shy to comment and say why. The story hasn't vanished into limbo, somebody read it. It always gives me a lift to know that.

I tend to think of it like comments are congratulations, and kudos are like a pat on the shoulder in passing. The congratulations mean more, but when you feel like you're sitting in a void sometimes, the pat on the shoulder sure doesn't go astray.

I love it, but I very often don't know what to say about a fic so having a little button I can press to let the author know that I liked it is something I really appreciate. And if I want to mention something specific I liked I can leave a comment as well.

If I couldn't leave kudos, I would just read the fic, possibly bookmark it, and move on.

There are many, many, many, in fact ten metric fuckloads of things that A03 should be criticized for (still using a tagging and categorization system from when it was a small site with its own specific fan-behaviors for a start), but the Kudos system is not one of them.

I'm sure you'll get shit for this OP, but I sympathize. I know kudos are convenient and fast, but sometimes the proper way to thank someone for writing a fic you enjoyed shouldn't be about what's convenient for the reader. It's like putting a lot of thought into getting a present for someone and then having them open up, flash you the thumbs up and then walk away without a word.

Isn't it how it is with everything now? I dislike the like and reblog system of Tumblr for this reason as well, people just click a button and it's just hard to get them talk to you.

I love getting kudos! It's daily validation that people like my stuff, and I don't have to reply. I can just feel happy without stress! And I like that the people who left it also didn't have to worry about the stress of thinking what to write in a comment.

Plus, it makes the comments I do get even more meaningful because someone took the greater-effort route on purpose :)

If I love something I will always write a personalized comment, and I do this fairly often, probably above average. I use kudos for non-specific positive feelings about something. I'm not saying your feelings are wrong or anything, but I hope the people who's fic I liked didn't take it as an insult. I am absolute shit at communicating with strangers, as well. I try pretty hard to give back.
