Would you really prefer it if 100 people had said "HEY I REALLY LIKED THIS, OKAY BYE" instead

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Really!

Well... uh... all right then. I guess I'm just wrong on this one.

+1

I treasure any kind of feedback because I write non-OTP fic in a tiny closed-canon fandom, so any kind of evidence that people like my fic is very deeply appreciated, including kudos.

But... a comment is sooo much better. I don't care if it's super-short ("Wow, that was great!" or whatever). It's PERSONAL. It means someone cared enough to communicate something directly to the author. And if they were logged in (as most commenters are), I can even see who liked it. (Most of the kudos on my fics are anonymous and I honestly don't have a clue most of the time who my readership is.)

So yes, I totally get your point, SD :-)

'cepting of course it isn't a choice between Kudos and comments. The folks who do kudosing don't leave comments anyway. Its would you rather have have kudoses, or nothing at all?

Now I know you, Stella, would prefer nothing at all in that case, cuz you're contrarywise like that, but for most folks a kudos or a "like" is the preferential option of those two.

if I comment, I kudos as well. it only makes sense: if I like it well enough to comment, it deserves kudos.

I do both. If I like a story, it gets both a kudo and a comment, because that's what I'd love to get.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-26 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, I both comment and give kudos (especially if the fic was written based on something I prompted over at say fic_promptly or comment_fic. So, yeah, there are people will will give kudos AND give feedback.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I would. I appreciate the kudos for what they are but the system feels so...standardized nonetheless. I'm not saying it's logical, but to me even a simple 'I liked this!' feels like the reader is talking to the author rather than almost mechanically hitting a button of approval.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay well, I don't understand that at all but whatever works.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-27 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Clearly you have not yet run into authors who slap down pretty nastily the generic 'I liked it' type of comment: just wait a few years until it's happened to you a few times and come back to us then...

(Anonymous) 2014-05-29 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
You're cute. I've been in fandom for about fifteen years, both as a reader and a writer--been there, done that thank you very much. I think maybe, just maybe, you missed the part where I was saying "to me" in my comment?

Yeah, I would, too.

I would. People taking the time to actually comment probably mean it, whereas leaving kudos can so easily be simply a misclick or just a neutral way of saying "yeah, I read this".

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I would, because that takes a little more effort than simply clicking a button. Kudos have as much meaning as a Facebook "like" because it's easy to do. Of course I'm going to value a comment (even a really short one!) more.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes yes a thousand times yes oh my God YES.

[personal profile] esteefee 2014-05-25 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
yep. but I realize some people are uncomfortable with saying that for some reason.

Yes: and why is it we cannot have nice things?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-27 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Because when you've been in fandom long enough, you run into writers who get irate that your comment was a mere 'I loved it' hit and run type since they would apparently prefer long, detailed, erudite praise instead.

Actually, I have seen also lots of writers who hate positive comments which detail one part of their story which is not THEIR own favorite part.

It's a cycle: you see it in every fandom: diva authors and unfortunately it's not always easy to tell in advance which is which until you get a truly nasty reply to one of your positive comments...

Which is why I only leave anon kudos, never comments. Ever: it was a long an painful lesson, but I have learned it over years of reading fanfic. Am I saying such writers should be stomped on hard? No: it's their work, they are allowed to have their own opinion, but in self-defense I have learned to never comment.

PS; And oh yes, said writers who run it for everyone else? Are quite often the same ones who are the most vocal in begging for comments and feedback.

Also, on a completely unrelated topic, I like your fics! Keep up the good work... :D

I've left quite a lot of comments in my time, but I can't say anyone's ever responded to a positive comment with HDU. Still, I've only been in for fandom for 10 years and I'm not denying your reality. I imagine that would suck, getting your kindness treated by a slap in the face.

And if you've been burned over and over, I can see making a call not to comment anymore. But as a general philosophy, I don't think that's why so many people kudos more often than commenting.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-26 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
yes, absolutely. i would prefer it even if all they said was "i liked this." comments just feel more personal to me. idgaf about kudos, but i treasure every comment.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-26 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely would not; I'm always appreciative, but if you're gonna take the time to leave a comment, let's have a conversation or something. Otherwise I'm happy just getting a kudos.

These people going "OH YES PLEASE GOD YES" sound super starved for attention.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-26 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I have to say I totally would.
