Really!

Well... uh... all right then. I guess I'm just wrong on this one.

+1

I treasure any kind of feedback because I write non-OTP fic in a tiny closed-canon fandom, so any kind of evidence that people like my fic is very deeply appreciated, including kudos.

But... a comment is sooo much better. I don't care if it's super-short ("Wow, that was great!" or whatever). It's PERSONAL. It means someone cared enough to communicate something directly to the author. And if they were logged in (as most commenters are), I can even see who liked it. (Most of the kudos on my fics are anonymous and I honestly don't have a clue most of the time who my readership is.)

So yes, I totally get your point, SD :-)

I guess the part that doesn't make sense to me is that, for me, a super-short comment like that isn't really saying any more than a kudos is. it doesn't have any content that a kudos doesn't have and it doesn't really take more effort. both of them are just saying, essentially, "I liked this fic" and nothing more. they just honestly seem pretty indistinguishable from each other. when someone is saying "I LIKE THIS" versus a kudos.

but like you say - just a difference of opinion!

Except those "individualized comments" are more likely to be "great fic" over and over and over a hundred times.

Oooh, a unique snowflake!

A lot of authors seem to disagree with you. How are readers supposed to know which is which?

It does, because I do not leave comments to irritate the writer but to try and let them know their story is appreciated.

You seem to assume comments that get slapped down are negative comments, which is just not true.

If I care enough about the story that I would leave a comment, then I care enough to check that my comment was not taken ill. Again, you seem assume that this is really rare and therefore can safely be ignored: after you have been in fandom long enough, you'll see that it's really not.
