I didn't know how many writers were pissed off when people read their work and liked it without leaving a full explanation as to why until I read this thread. I hope they don't become professionals, where every reader sending a review would become time consuming at best.

Professionals get paid for their work. They have hard numbers and sales figures that show them how much readers appreciate what they do. Fanfic writers are not only expected to do it for love of the fandom, but we're also demonized for enjoying positive feedback as well. I don't even know how people can get so ugly and mean about giving so little, but there you have it.

Yeah, except one is a job. The other is a huge amount of effort put in to creating something that will hopefully make a shared space a little more interesting.

They both involve crafting words, but they are two completely different ballgames.

Many famous writers have faithfully read and responded to their reviews. Caroline Keene, the woman who wrote Nancy Drew, apparently wrote back to every little girl (or boy, I'd imagine) who ever wrote to her, even when she was a terribly old lady, a fact that made her daughter quite bitter. C.S. Lewis apparently garnered many long distance friendships this way. So no, not everyone would consider receiving reviews to to be a drag.

But, more to the point, I agree with the two people above me. Comparing someone's job to someone else's hobby is a fallacious comparison. They both involve words and ideas, but that's about it.
