As you said, the overlap isn't perfect, so perhaps this is silly to say:

A lot of the reason I like comments is because I can then tell people thank you. If they give something more than "great fic" I like to engage them in a conversation about whatever their comment was. If it's great fic, I go "^_^v" or "XD" and leave it at that.

I do consider "great fic" to be greater than kudos in terms of strength. Perhaps I am underestimating the power of thought readers put behind kudos, though...
